Martinez is good now, but Hagler was great all time. Marvin had a 75 inch reach and solid power and skills. Marvin would win every round.

I'd have Hagler winning but it'd be competitive. Hagler hated fighting tricky elusive fighters.

Martinez is anything but tricky and definitely not elusive you dumbass. how he got this reputation is beyond me. Duran at MW was a tougher technical challenge than Mrtinez.

    Hagler would rip him apart.

    Dumbass?

Martinez is a pretty smart fighter. Not sure what you're talking about. Guy is good moving and gets in and out with punches. Hes decent at slipping shots.

As far as your Duran bit, all Duran really did was stand in front of Hagler and poke a jab in his face. The comparison is not valid. MArtinez is not a guy who is just going to stand there and duke it out with Hagler, thats what Hagler liked.

Did Hagler ever fight anyone else who did some of what Leonard?
Try to fight him on his terms. In and out, etc.

I know Hearns tried boxing ata distance for a while, to no avail. Anyone else?

I am tempted to say the ATG Hagler without doubt, but Martinez may be better than we give him credit for. And he might have at least lasted the distance.

by the time Hearns started boxing Marvin, it was because he was exhausted. So the whole point of starting to box in round 2 would not work. Tommy was just too tired. Marvin was tired also, but Marvin was more natural at the weight so he was still stronger than Tommy physically, even though Tommy punched much harder than Marvin.

a little, but it helped Marvin that he was a natural middleweight and Tommy was not. Marvin was physically a little stronger, even though Hearns rocked him with his punches. Too bad Tommy broke his hand when he hit Marvin because had his right hand held up, Marvin might have been stopped. I always thought in a rematch Tommy would have knocked out Marvin via TKO. It would have been a slower fight since Marvin would not have been able to go tops like he did in that first fight, and Tommy would have been more settled down and picked his shots more, and Marvin could not defend well against Hearns punches. Even when Tommy was tired, he seemed to not miss Hagler with his punches. And the pace slower means Tommy would have gotten some distance on his right and hit Marvin with it. And we saw that Tommy could indeed hurt Marvin.

    Hmm.
Interesting comment given that Tommy would soon go all the way to LHW, or was it cruiserweight. And Hagler I think never fought above MW.

Guys, you know I love Marvin, but let's face it; making him come down to middleweight now, after over thirty years inactivity, at nearly sixty years of age? It's a disaster waiting to happen! Martinez is so much younger than Hagler now (in his prime) that it'd be like making...I don't know, Hopkins and Pacal fight, or something. Ridiculous! :patsch Anyway, to round out the obvious and valid reasons to go for Martinez by knockout, Hagler lost his last fight and Martinez won his last fight by knockout of a younger man than Hagler who'd never been knocked out OR defeated. Martinez by knockout.

He's no Bernard Hopkins, but, based on Martinez not being a slow,one-dimensional brawler that plays right into Hagler's hands,he certainly has the style and athletic ability to cause problems.

There was a Mexican journeyman/fringe contender by the name of Marcus Geraldo who pretty much laid the blue print for Leonard.I don't know if Leonard's ever credited him for the performance, but there are certain similarities between the way Geraldo fought Hagler and the way Leonard fought him.He sat back, used a little movement, fought in spurts and counter punched with effective flurries.Hagler beat him comfortably on the scorecards, but it was a very difficult fight for him against a very, very opponent.

Tommy never had great physical strength above 168, but he still had punching power and sharp punching and boxing skills. The fact Tommy kept winning just shows how great he was, but it was not because of physical strength. Look at when he fights Virgil Hill or Kinchen or Andries. It is his speed and punching sharpness and skills which get him through, not physical strength. Sometimes people confuse punching power with physical strength and the fact that he has strong arms, but his legs were not as strong.
