im going with monzon on a very very close decision, I think he can use his size and great jab to dictate the tempo and bag more rounds.

don't you think hagler would come in close like he did vs tall hearns and hurt monzon?

I think monzon would fight at a much lower pace then hearns did, and just try to keep him at the end of that long jab. Also his chin was iron.
Hagler could take it if it went 15 rounds or monzon had a lazy camp or something but If I had to choose I would go with monzon close decision. I cant see a ko happening because guys have great chins.

definitely, I think monzon is one of the few in history that would be able to beat prime hagler, but it would never be easy.

good point. monzon was great at controlling the pace, only quicking up the pace when he needed so.

you have to factor in discipline - Hagler was a fanatical gym rat and lived like a spartan in training camps .

Carlos loved the playboy jet set of the 70's and was a true party animal - maybe it would be something as simple as commitment that would have seperated them.

Hagler by UD over 15 competitive and close rounds or maybe a late, late stoppage due to Carlos gassing out in the championship rounds .

Despite Monzon being a playboy who drunk and was a smoker he had amazing stamina. he could definitely go 15 rounds.

i love hagler, but i think he'd have doubts about imposing himself like he tended to against fighters he respected/had an inferiority complex with. he admired monzon and made no secret of his desire to equal his record of middleweight defences.

i don't think he would assert himself like he did against hearns (not that that's enough to beat monzon anyway). instead he'd be patient, box, move, come in when given the chance, but he'd be out-thought by the master strategist with a god-like sense of distance. hagler would be discouraged by the solid counters, and wouldn't have it all his own way on the inside (although this is how he'd win his rounds). down the stretch, with hagler realising he can't get to monzon consistently, he tries to hurt him, but realises he can't do this either.

imagine the duran hagler fight, but with monzon not suffering from the height and reach disadvantages that duran did. in fact, those are advantages for him. monzon's accuracy would always keep hagler guessing, and monzon would keep hagler just far enough away so as not to expose his lack of speed (of body/head).

hagler would win rounds by imposing his will and physical strength + hand speed (especially on the inside), but these would be negated more often than not, as he's befuddled by monzon's ring generalship. in my opinion, hagler fought two guys who tried something a bit different - duran and leonard, and didn't fully get to grips with either of them.

the championship rounds would be amazing between these two, both really had a lot left physically and mentally at this point. monzon edges it 9-6 or 8-7, with no knockdowns and no points deductions.

completely agree with all of this, monzon and hearns are entirely different propositions in pretty much all aspects bar being rangy.

agreed, one of the few. this is the fantasy fight i'd choose to watch above all others!

When did Monzon ever show discipline/stamina issues inside the ring?

Anyways, it'd be a close one, but I favor none over King Carlos at Middleweight, Hagler included. I'd go in-depth but it's one that's been discussed ad nauseam and I don't really have the time.
