Yes, Monzon by a very close decision over Hagler. I rate Monzon and Hagler as the top #1 and #2 middleweights of all time respectively.

Carlos seemed to have a 5th Gear that he very rarely had to engage, in fact he had to fight his hardest in the Valdez fights, the last two of his career, if he was capable of those types of efforts, at that stage of his career, against the classy Columbian firebrand Valdez, what hidden reserves did he keep under wraps at his peak, Carlos Luxuriated in the 15 round distance, he seemed to know where he was in terms of superiorty at all times, and when to fully establish it, it could be said, not much style, but a whole lot of substance.

One thing worries me about Marvin in this match, when up against another acknowledged great, Would he show him too much respect ? he certainly did against a crafty but not savage former lightweight Duran, Duran's flicking right hand counters late in the fight seemed to keep Marvin more occupied then they rightly should, Monzon's Crunching right hands are on another level altogether, and Carlos ha no Ammo Shortage, Marvin, when up againt someone with a Rep for mayhem had previously displayed a hint of caution, or superb intelligence depending on your viewpoint, his early "Boxing" against wreckers like Hart, Briscoe and Sibson was indeed sensible, a Skinny ex Welter beanpole like Hearns, and a ex Jr Middle like Mugabi - tactical wisdom probably dictated that Standing off and boxing was not the best policy, but a full blooded great Middle Like Monzon, a Big Long-armed Middle Like Monzon, A Tall Hard to catch, but quick to counter Middle Like Monzon, I dont think we would See the "Gung 'Ho" Marvin, More the Mobile tormentor than the aggressive terminator.

I think Carlos was one of those fighters who at range can look ackward, and uncordinated, but when cutting lose brings together a cohesion, not flashy but very effective, an effectiveness that perhaps only an opponent inside the ring can truely understand, i think that like the leonard fight, Marvin many sacrifice too many of the early rounds, when Carlos himself can be Sleepwalking, but as Marvin Steps it up, he find this unflappable not only stays with him, but engages that 5th Gear, Carlos's Jabs may keep Marvin occupied and those big right hands may keep Marvin a little under wraps, when Marvin does launch an attack, he may like so many find it nail Carlos, perhaps harder than Carlos finds it to nail him with a counter flurry,
a tough hard fight, but i think Marvin's respectful nature may be a contributing factor in a close but Clear defeat on points.

Just as a guess it seems to me the general consensus comes in about 60/40 in monzons favor for this fight. I think it would be close and both guys are capable of beating the other and in a trilogy we would like see that come to fruition.

But for my money no MW will ever be able to beat the Hagler that won the belt from Alan Minter! Hagler close but clear UD

Monzon too big and strong and tough for Hagler who was smallish middleweight. Monzon walked around at about 185, Hagler 165 the most.

It's a tough call between 2 of the 3 greatest middleweights of all time (Greb being the other). There's no doubt in my mind the fight would last the distance.
The reason I see Monzon winning it is because Hagler came up with horrible strategies against the two greatest boxers he faced (Leonard and Duran). If he gifted away the early rounds like he did in those fights, Monzon just would not let him back in the fight at all.
