They both started out at 165

Patterson eventually moved up to HW
    Hagler moved down to MW

    Who was better at 165?

Patterson was a young fighter at that weight, but still extremely skilled with good power, but lost to Maxim, Hagler did weigh 162 a few times and 161 a few. But if they had fought while both were at the skill level they were during that early time in their careers, I would go with Patterson because he fought more bouts at the weight, Hagler was mostly a MW, I think if he had tried to move up and fight for a Title he would have lost just enough to not be the Hagler we expect at MW. You really can't say who wins in Prime because Floyd was anywhere from 185-218 so he definitley would beat Hagler in Prime, just not enough from hagler at that weight to really conisder or discuss it much.
