Not a question of who would win (Hagler for me). Rather, could prime Marvin KO this guy too? I'm thinking it would be a late stoppage.
I dont know..I think it would be a tough fight for Marvin and one he would be content with boxing smart in. Valdez went to war with Briscoe enough to prove his durability.
I'd probably side with Hagler if pressed at gunpoint, his versatility and ring-smarts being the difference. Valdez, however, stands a reasonable chance here IMO. He wouldn't have to go looking for Hagler and had all the offensive tools necessary to implement his gameplan.
It'd be the roughest fight Hagler ever had - and he fought the goatish Antuofermo & Hamsho. But Valdez wouldn't be butting, he'd be hitting as hard as Eugene Hart, John Mugabi and Thomas Hearns, but for longer in a sustained assault that would last the whole fight. Still, Hagler wins. Comes down to the jab, which was far sharper and speedier than a hard but lunging Briscoe lead, and it would surprise Valdez ten times per round.
I don't think that Valdez, who showed his stuff twice against Monzon and three times against Briscoe would have been stopped by Hagler. He (Valdez) was cat quick and clever in addition to being tough and such a wicked puncher. He would have been a very capable and dangerous foe for Hagler, and I'm really not so sure of who would have won, but I'm sure it would have gone 15 rounds.
My opinion is that Hagler, if he really set his mind to it, might be able to stop Valdez late. But I really believe that Hagler would have resorted to skill more than strength in this one. Something like Roberto Duran. MMH would have to apply himself here and work hard, but in the end would have won a clear, convincing decision.
