both prime should be a hell of a fight. i believe tough tony the steel man from gary indiana has a slight edge as hes carved out of granite, but then again hagler is a true warrior and his southpaw style might bother tony. tossup you guys pick em. how and why?
I can see Hagler bulding up an early lead and Zale gradually boring in and bridging the gap. Would come down to a very close one on the judges cards. I just about favour Hagler.
I think Hagler would excel against any middleweight you care to name who stylistically comes after him aggressively....
Hagler was more skilled and his game was more versatile..... And he was bigger too..... Many advantages for Hagler in this one.....
Tony's power is no threat to Hagler (Marvin fought bigger punchers). Hagler has better boxing skills. Hagler has quicker hands. Hagler has quicker feet. Hagler has faster reflexes. Hagler is better defensively. Hagler has a better chin. The only advantage Zale has in this fight--and it is only a slight one-- is power. As stated earlier, Marvin has no problems dealing with that. I love Zale. One of my favs. But Hagler wins 12 of 15 rounds or scores a TKO on cuts.
Boxing Illustrated 1984 put this matchup to 3 guys. Two of which were Ray Arcel & Jimmy Jacobs. Third guy I cant remember. Anybody recall who responded what?
I'm sitting on the fence in regards to who would have won a fantasy fight between Zale [man of steel] and Marvin Hagler [great and tough hombre], but I don't understand the term "Hagler was bigger to"...Tony Zale at 160 was as big as Marvin Hagler at 160 lbs. Hagler was 1/12"inches taller...Big Deal... I cannot envision a Vito Antueformo lasting 15 rounds with the great puncher Tony Zale in his prime...Vito would have been catnip to a Zale, Al Hostak, Freddie Steele, Fred Apostoli, Georgie Abrams, a Marcel Cerdan etc ,top MWs of Tony Zale's time BEFORE Zale lost 4 years of his prime whilst in the Navy...What a great MW era...Tossup between Zale and Hagler, the best MW since the 1940s...
In my head for some reason I always thought that Zale was a small MW, but I have to admit here, as you said that impression is not so real.....just checked in Boxrec and his size was normal for a MW.... But even so the reach difference would be relevant in my opinion. Hagler with 75″ of reach would be a tough guy to deal if he was the prime version of Hagler, which was a fighter that liked to box and had a good jab in his prime days....
I give the edge to Hagler because of his superior boxing ability, and quickness, decision win in a great fight.
