Yes... And I thought Mike McCallum looked PORKY in his girth section when he was champion for a brief stitch in time at 175 pounds in the 1990's... M.M. was a tall enough at 5' 11" tall, but his body frame was slender.... Anything over 168 pounds was too heavy for Mike McCallum to carry into the ring, but he did it anyway... Also, yes, 1987 was the year Mike McCallum came into the light... In 1987, Marvin Hagler was done.... NO DUCKAGE there.....:think MR.BILL
Despite the fact that James "Hard ****" Green lost on a cut / TKO to Frank Fletcher in the early 80s, Frank Fletcher was washed up to the maxi pad by the time John Mugabi wasted "The Animal" on network TV in 1985... In my book, John Mugabi had a MUCH harder time kayoing Green than he had with a shot Fletcher.... I have this stuff on tape.. Frank Fletcher fought Mugabi like he was scared shitless.... Fletcher's confidence was gone after the KO to Juanito Roldan in Nov. of '83.... Peace...:happy :happy MR.BILL
I have Mugabi v Green on tape ,I think you have just emphasised my point actually, McCallum was at least as deserving of a title shot as Mugabi ,but owing to Mickey Duff's skillful lobbying Mugabi got the call.ps Mugabi was sitting in front of me at the Royal Albert Hall one evening wearing a stetson and a white suit, when one of the fights got lively he stood up .I told him to sit down,he turned round looked at me and did so ,obviously I scared him. Actually I didnt know who he was ,he was later introduced in the ring ,I had to wait till I got home before I could change my trousers.
I think people are forgetting the impact Mugabi had made at this time. Mccallum had beat Minchillo, Mannion and Braxton, he was yet to fight a relatively unknown Julian Jackson Mugabi was battering Curtis parker, Wilbert Vampire Johnson,James Green, Earl Hargrove, and Frank Fletcher, all well known tv fighters . He was one of the most talked about fighters of the day.
He could certainly hit ,and gave Hagler a good fight ,even though he hurt his hand early in the fight, trouble was Hagler had a chin of concrete .
Mugabi looked like **** / burned out when he fought and got thumbed by Duane Thomas in December of 1986... I knew then that the end was near for John Mugabi... Yes, "Hagler & Mugabi" sorta' ruined each other, but Hagler had more money and knew he was slowing down at age 33..... Marvin Hagler looked good, but slow against a spry Ray Leonard in 1987..... Hager could've carried onward with his boxing career, but, he was smart to just pack-it-in.... John Mugabi beat a hopeless bum named Rene Jaquot in '89 and then was quickly iced by Terry Norris in 1990..... After that, the 1991 icing by Gerald McClellan was utterly horrid.... I'd already given up on Mugabi by that point.... Cheers... MR.BILL
Good point,"sorta ruined each other". Mugabi did give give Hagler one of his hardest, most brutal fights. Apparently it was watching this fight when Ray Leonard thought to himself that he could take Hagler.
Hagler didn't duck either Graham or McCallum. Graham didn't win the brit title at 160 til 85, he didn't win the Euro title until 86. He got his @ss whipped the first time he fought a legit contender (Kalambay). McCallum had a choice. Fight at 160 and earn his shot by fighting his way thru the minefield of contenders OR fight at 154 and get a vacant title handed to him with an easy win over Sean "Who?" Mannion. We know which route he chose.
Sean Mannion sucked eggs... I got that fight on tape... It sucked.... Boring ass 15 rounder in which Mike McCallum basically won every round.... Winning a vacant belt over Sean Mannion didn't mean jack spit.... Yes.. Herol Graham usually got beat whenever he fought a real fighter from America.... Jesus H., Jules Jackson KO'd Graham in wicked fashion....
You made me laugh with your post Graham was beat by McCallum [Jamaican],Jackson,[Virgin Islander] Kalambay ,[Zairean].and Brewer,he was beating Brewer ,had him down twice, outpointing Jackson till he got caught.I'm no fan of Graham or any other Ingle fighter, but to claim all those fighters as American is quite funny.
American or not, I do know the difference.. BUT! The initial point was, Herol Graham usually was beaten when he stepped up to the plate and took on the world's best at 160 pounds..... I never saw or thought anything special from Graham.... Peace...:blood MR.BILL
