I'll batter Carey then take title from Scots star Ricky, warns Michael Gomez This content is protected By Craig Swan RAGING Michael Gomez last night vowed to give Baz Carey a kicking inside and outside of the ring - then rip the Commonwealth title from Coatbridge's Ricky Burns. The Manchester-based brawler is straining to get a hold of Carey in the super-featherweight showdown at Motherwell's Dalziel Park and Country Club on October 10. Gomez defeated his opponent six months ago at the SECC but was stunned to read comments from Carey in the aftermath of the Glasgow show. The 31-year-old has not forgotten the outburst and insists he'll make the fighter pay during and after the bout. Gomez said: "He's going to come unstuck I can tell you. I'll punch his head in. After I do that in the ring, I'm going to take him outside and give him a right good kicking. "Last time I beat him on points but I was messing about. I was being nice to dead nice to him and respectful and I even went for a meal with him after the weigh-in. "Then I heard he was badmouthing me the following week. What a bad mistake to start slagging the gypo off. "He said he took the fight at the last minute and if he had more notice he would have beaten me. "He said I was too easy to hit. The reason I was easy to hit was because I wasn't in fight mode. I'm going to stop him and put on a right show on." Gomez is desperate for a blistering show to stay on course for a shot at Burns who last weekend landed the super-featherweight Commonwealth title. He said: "The fight I am looking for is Ricky Burns. I think it would sell out in Manchester or in Scotland. "He is the man I'm looking for with his Commonwealth belt. Ricky boxed well but I think he's one of the weakest Commonwealth champions around. Don't get me wrong, he is a decent fighter and strong but it is a fight I would love. "I've always wanted to be Commonwealth champion because I have never won that title. "I'm not in boxing for the love of the sport. I'm here to win titles and make money." Gomez insists he still has the ability and desire to be a champion again having held the WBU belt at super-feather and added: "I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I had more titles in me. "I'm looking for a title towards the end of this year. If not, early next year. I've had lots of offers for things but there's no point in rushing. Carey, then another warm-up and then titles." Promoter Carlo Rea said: "It's great to have Michael on the bill. We wanted exciting fighters and you can't get better than a former world champion like him."
Gomez looked utterly shot to bits a year or so ago and know he's on a charge. Good stuff. Reckon Burns can beat him tho !
Man, if Cooke bottles out of a Burns fight John Murray style, I would be quite happy if it meant he got the chance to give Gomez one final beatdown & send him into retirement:good
To be fair to Murray though the Burns fight didn't happen because he moved up to Lightweight(in truth he actually never fought at Super-Featherweight). Gomez would be a tricky fight for Burns, but if Burns could get through the first few rounds he should outbox him over the majority of the fight and possibly stop him because Gomez just doesn't have the stamina to do 12 nowdays.
I think Gomez could beat Burns actually and i'm quite neutral been in the ring with both and on a personal level both are good lads. Burns was good the other night but I dont know if he can cut it at the highest level domestically. Hope the fight doesn't happen tbh.
Exactly why these belts devalue a fighters credibility. If the promoter had said - its a pleasure to have one of the finest British champions for many years I doubt there could have been many arguments.
I would back Gomez to beat Burns, even on current form. Burns doesn't impress me all that much, Johanneson PLAYED with him for 12 rounds - usually Johanneson either blows you away or lets you dictate. Gomez gave him a torrid time before succumbing though after about six, when the scores must have been pretty close. I remember Carl telling me that Gomez would give Khan a nightmare and I laughed at him to be honest, but that's boxing I suppose.
