..up on the the business end of the card, anyway. Both of the co-headliners are defending ABU titles against visitors from elsewhere on the continent. Hamza - known by the ring moniker "Hassan Mwakinyo" and nicknamed "Champez" - is defending at super welter, and is the country's most famous and p4p top boxer. Tony "AK-47" Rashid Ngongo is probably #2 just behind Hamza on both counts, and is drawing up his fortifications at super bantam.

 

Yep but this IS our Friday boxing fix, so, beggars, choosers and what have you.

 

Flora Paulo Machela just outpointed Aisha Kizango in a women's bout on the undercard (6x2x rounds @ super bantamweight)

Round 1

Issa jabbing down at the much smaller Yusuph (the latter a career 140lber; Issa began at lightweight but has campaigned as high as 154). BoxRec has both listed as southpaws but Issa standing orthodox. Issa clips Yusuph in an exchange, taking his drumrolls on the body and overhand left up top in order to crack him with a right that staggers Yusuph back. Issa jabs and tosses 1-2s casually at the high guard of Yusuph the rest of the way.

Round 2

Issa keeps floating his left jab over the right glove of Yusuph, clogging the lane so he can't get a southpaw jab off, and making him jerk away from dramatically wound-up left uppercuts feints downstairs. Issa circling and jabbing, pulling the right cross until he gets a clear look to unholster it. Yusuph attacks busily, leading with lunging straight lefts up on his toes or looping shots on the side, and following through with high right hooks as Issa backpedals. Issa caught - hurt! - down! - out!

KO2!

 

Yusuph Lazaro improves to 10-2 (9), and local fighter Manny Issa - who I think was actually supposed to win here, given the welcome by the crowd and the commentators' shock when he was KTFO - falls to 12-4-2 (9).

 

Alright, time for "AK-47" aka "Bad Belle" Rashid and "Dancing Shoes" aka "Wonder Boy" Mahlangu in the co-main.
