You hear the explanations about round stealing, Dundee training Leonard to do this and that, large ring, 12 round distance...

But there's one facet of it that isn't discussed very often.

I just watched a TV piece on Hagler where at the end he talks about it partly came down to the powers that be .With the boxing establishment wanting Hagler to lose because they were interested in a second match between the two... With even more money to be made.

First off, how much money was made by each fighter in the first? I know it was a massive event.

And does the theory hold any weight? I know the rematch was talked about for years afterwards.

    Thoughts?

surely a fight that close warrants a rematch, whomever won and someone of Leonards stature and popularity im sure could force a rematch

Yes, but Hagler's point was that it was close MAINLY for the sake of a even larger mega event down the road.

Many superfights are not particularly close but are open books at the end (Because of poor judging, or rather, predetermined judging) for potential rematches.

    Mayweather/Hoya

    Hoya/Trinidad

    See the trend there?

I don't know why judges are biased towards Hagler. I just know that they are. He's just one of those fighters that doesn't get the respect he deserves. He's a true working class sort of fellow. Those with bigger reputation and flasher styles appeal more to the sensibilities of many judges, who tend to be well-to-do white guys. They have trouble identifying with a lunchbox low profile boxer-puncher.

Leonard didn't believe he would pull off another convincing performance. That's why there was no rematch.

Hagler got $12m and Ray $11m. Nice money in the 80's

No it was close but clear to Leonard and the majority of unbiased fans who know how to score had it to Leonard, for some reason people have a hatred for Ray and want to disparidge his achievements

Leonard won this fight by two points, but Hagler would've stopped him if it was scheduled for 15. Hagler was the fresher, hungrier fighter at the final bell while Leonard looked gassed and relieved that the fight was over.

well, leonard won the fight. his rd stealing strategy worked well plus hagler was bullshitting the first 4 rds so it enabled leonard to get the victory. however it seemed that leonard knew he wouldnt be as fortunate in a rematch so it never happened

I've watched this fight over 50 times, im unbiased towards Hagler or Leonard, for me they are both legendary champions and im a huge fan of both, but every single time i score it, i score it for Leonard by a couple of rounds .. The supposed controversy surrounding this fight is absolutely ridiculous, some people talk about this fight as the biggest robbery of all time .. I dont think Leonard was as good as his camp say but i do think Hagler was terrible in that fight, far too slow, far too predictable and never able to get his punches off ..
Hagler and his corner knew full well that this was a close fight going into the last round, Marvin was just pissed off that he had been beaten by the man he'd been chasing for years, he was obsessed with Leonard and when he finally got him in the ring he got beat .. He was bitter and a lot of boxing fans are bitter because they hate certain aspects of Ray Leonard and his marketing machine but scoring Sugar Ray Leonard as the winner of that fight is easy, he picked off Hagler on the back foot making Hagler look slow, his ring generalship was superb and he was clearly the better boxer that night .. Leonard stole rounds, but closely fought rounds are always there to be stole, he did a better job than Hagler on the night and fully deserved the decision in my opinion

It comes down to Marv's failure to take Ray out after promising in a press conference promoting the match that his fists were his judges, "'K' and 'O.'" He raised expectations far beyond what he was able to deliver in the ring, and may have somehow biased the scoring officials in favor of SRL with his declaration. This is somebody who had serious issues in the past with unfavorable scoring when going the distance. Even if the decision had gone in Hagler's favor, just the fact of Ray being on his feet at the final bell was seriously tarnishing to Marv's legacy. (I also believe SRL made a deal with :thedevil1.)
