Were there any fighters in the Hall of Fame that had no heart at all? Now, I'm not trying to sound rude because these guys are brave enough to step into a ring. I just wanted to know if there are HoF fighters that were known to have skills but not the will to keep fighting on when the going gets tough. I can't seem to think of any at the moment.
Well some people were bitching about Tszyu's inclusion a while back and sighted his loss to Hatton as a sign of a lack of heart. Personally I thought this was ridiculous (he was past his best, had fought his heart out,was spent, couldn't win and his corner stopped it anyway) as Kostya had shown previously an ability to come back from knockdowns, cuts and bad swelling to gain a win. He had heart a plenty.
It really depends on what you mean by no heart. The hall of fame is full of fighters who quit/surrendered during a match.
I love Tyson, have him locked in my top 10 ATG heavyweights, but there was definitely alot lacking in the heart department, which is strange, because I dont think he lacked heart.....it seemed like he just didnt care about taking an ass whupping once the going got tough, and his legacy/image had all but disintegrated following his esteem shattering Robin Givens divorce/farce, **** conviction, and love of drugs and general stupid ****.
In interviews after he retired, Arguello was candid about giving up at the end of Pryor II, and was actually known to make light of it. In hindsight, that was a disturbing precursor to giving up on life itself, although there are conspiracy theorists who question whether or not he was the one who offed himself. Maybe Max Baer and Tyson could be mentioned, however, Maxie did show some guts against Schmeling, and Tyson trucked on for four complete rounds after getting decked in Holyfield I. Gans was mercilessly savaged in the press for quitting in his first challenge of Erne, but those accounts conveniently omit the fact Joe had his eye hanging out at the end.
Absolutely. It's the ones who never stopped trying who deserve more note. Frazier is beloved for never conceding defeat, even against hopeless odds. His heart is part of the reason he's even alive today, despite decades of arthritis and high blood pressure, diabetes, and a spine splitting car accident.
