Second set from the old timers category...who stays, who goes based on greatness alone? This content is protected
This will take much thought but after the initial and cursory glance, the only one that stuck out that I feel strongly about taking off immediately, with no disrespect to him, would be Ingo. I would probably take off Barry as well and I'm not big on having Willard there given your angle. I'll have to come back, but admittedly some of these names are vague enough for me to only know them ...from seeing them listed as HOF fighters.
Yeah, this is definitely an assignment for the detail oriented if you chose to go through every name. For now Im hoping people will pick and choose off the tops of their heads and get some good insight and conversation going about those picks.
In addition to these sentiments, I also think of Norton. And Ken was indicted in 1992, something doubly obscene. At least Ingo dethroned a reigning undisputed HW Champion decisively. Maybe the best way to begin here would be by pruning lesser HW titleholders off the list. Every undisputed Queensbury champion who dethroned a reigning kingpin prior to Leon Spinks is in Canastota, with the sole exception of Carnera. (And Primo is the only eligible HW Champion to successfully defend the title who is not in the IBHOF.) "As goes the heavyweights, so goes boxing," is an old axiom, and might prove a good guide on how to begin this task.
good point, with only a few exceptions any HW champ seems to get an automatic pass in, no matter how shaky the claim i also echo every word of boxed ears and ingo and barry are the only ways i'd throw out right away with a little thought towards norton
oh and papp, that was based it terms almost more on politics and nostalgia than any actual achievement
And perhaps speculation on what might have been, had the Communist Hungarian Government allowed Papp to compete for the world MW crown. On the other hand, if amateur achievements are to be part of the equation, then Stevenson should be inducted immediately.
If you are going to judge HOF credentials based on greatness than you have to have a foulmoria to do so and stick to it for all boxers. Otherwise "greatness" is an aburtary term.
Papp being in has always rubbed me the wrong way. He was a good fighter with great potential, but he shouldn't be credited with a spot in the HOF because he got screwed and couldn't continue his career. Im not trying to be callous towards the man, but every other major HOF's induction is based on accomplishment at the highest level. If their is an amateur boxing hall of fame, put Papp in. But as a pro he just didn't earn it in my opinion.
Resume and accomplishment. Leave out the h2h arguments for fighters because they prove nothing. Getting in should be based mostly on the level of competition you actually beat in your career. When it comes to modern times I think its a bit harder to discern because of fractured titles and all the weight classes, but should be based on the same premise. Im open to other idea's though.
It would be interesting to see somebody try to make a case for Papp. Looking at his professional record, I just don't see it. "It is what it is," definitely ought to take precedence over the notion of righting the injustice of having his career cut short by politics, and speculation over what might've been. Also, he himself indicated in print that his government may have made the right call by deeming him too old. He may have been an Archie Moore type for all we know, but the fact remains that he was already 38 years old when they retired him, and turned 39 five months after his swan song with Mick Leahy. How realistic is it that he would have been able to beat either Giardello or Tiger at that age?
