Haha Big George has some funny lines man. 1 of my faves- "The difference is Torres can take Cotto's best shot...." Then Cotto floors him!! Back to topic, the build up and trash talk up to this fight was immense. The big **** off bill-boards to this epic entrance thats big fight boxing man
Exactly man. Boxing seems stale as **** compared to back then. Thanks for posting.... Even better fight then I thought at the time, tried to watch it unbiasedly and Kelley was boxing brilliantly but got nailed. Naseem was one of my favourite fighters, and by all accounts he's mellowed into a really nice, family man. Just a thought, how would he have been recieved in New York post 9-11? And also does he look back embarassed at some of his behaviour because he really was a complete tool at times. Like at the end of this fight when the physician is trying to check Kelly is ok.
I'm not sure how true it is, but weren't there rumours that part of the reason that Naz only fought once after losing to Barrera was because HBO weren't as keen to deal with him after 9/11?
Harsh if thats the case, but some of his allah akbar entrances were ****ing embarassing. Imagine this post 9-11 in NYC- there would have literally been murders [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV9uFNPDJOk[/ame] ;-)
Yedp, there were rumours and it did seem to me that the Yanks were in no mood for anything Islamic around that time. How much part that played in Naz's decision to retire is anyones guess, he seemed to losing a bit of interest in boxing either way.
Haha I dunno. 9/11 seems not too long ago, like 5 years to me, but seeing Nas fighting seems like an eternity ago! Weird. I completely forgot 9/11 happened when Nas was still fighting.
Boxing entertainment at this best this one. Hamed coined the phrase "spank the yank" in the build up.
It was in the media that hbo told naz to fight in the UK for the next 4 fights or so..(just after 9/11). This was blatant due to the fact that Naz was preaching or showing his admiration for the faith. Alot of fighters were told to hold it down, mike tyson, hopkins, rahman to name a few.
yeah the build up to trinidad-hopkins REALLY toned down on hopkins faith. trinidads faith and catholicism was also improved on. also corny as hell when the fight finished and the crowd started chanting 'U.S.A' naz was detested on so many levels. but the u.s. in general hated him for his complete disregard to everything a champion should be. i also think he had to be unbeaten to stay a box office draw. when he lost to berrera there where lots of people saying 'i told you so' and where never going to tune in again. anyways people should really look at some kelley fights. anyone seen the gainer fight? Kelley was boxing the better and Naz was all over the place , i thought kelley was gonna get up from the knockout but even after the 10 count he stumbled forward.
