I don't think they're relevant when you're talking about a matchup against a fighter that's clearly elite level.. he doesn't need a resume to prove it, just watching him you could see he is.

So Hamed would beat JMM, but couldn't beat or land anything huge on Barrera? Do you think that's because JMM is the less relaxed fighter? Or are you one of those Hamed fans who thinks a "prime, fully focused Naz" would beat Barrera too?

I believe JMM would begin by fighting very cautiously on the outside, because he's a fairly slow starter and Hamed is an insane puncher. But JMM would be able to adjust to Hamed quickly and by the 4th round Hamed would become frustrated and have no answer to JMM's movement and counters. He would try to land bombs on Marquez, but JMM would see them coming and follow his gameplan effectively without fighting too tentatively.

BTW, I'm a Naseem Hamed fan and when I was growing up he was my favorite fighter after Tyson. But I don't know how anybody could favor Naz over a 126 version of Barrera or a prime JMM.. you would have to look at the matchup with bias to say Hamed has better than a 50% chance.

thats a fair assessment. And by looking at the Naz v. Barrera fight and looking at Naz other fights, you see the terrible job suarez and steward did training Hamed and the pathetic gameplan he had against Barrera.

I just think Juarez would've been too tentative and given up too many rounds and lost a decision.

Hamed wasnt training right at the point when Barrera beat him, many say he was already past his prime. In his prime, i say he KOs the glass jawed Marquez.

And dispite all those names you put up there, Marquez still takes him to school for a wide UD.

Marquez was down against Barrera and Pacman a total of 4 times. IF Hamed lands Marquez stays down. Marquez isnt a boxing god he lost to Norwood and John in his prime. Hamed by KO he'd get to Marquez at some point

Maybe a show of hands from Americans who say JMM wins? My guess is it's mostly Brit fans that say Hamed.

I think Hamed was hated by the average American fan for being an Arab. I remember when he forst went over there Kelly said in an interview how much all the other American boxers, Afro-American included hated Hamed, even though they'd never met him!

It reminds me of an incident I read in Jack Dempsey's bio to highlight the treatment black boxers at the time got. An exceptional black boxer, maybe Sam Langford, was beating up on some highly rated white heavyweight. Before he knocked him out, the white ref stopped the fight and declared the white boxer the winner. When asked why he did that, the ref replied "If I let that ****** knock the white boy out, them ******s would get so uppity and as it is, we have enough problems with them".
America's moved on since then (too far in my opinion - now white boys are thought of as hopless fighters, just ask Pavlik) in regards to blacks, but there definitely seemed to be a resentment of this unashamed Arab, cockily beating up on people when he should know his place and get pounded. Just have a look at the views the Yankee patriot types in The Lounge have about Arabs and you get the picture that there is an element to US society that just doesnt like seeing the wrong sort of people get "uppity".
