Before it fell apart after years of abuse, that is. Thoughts? I know he was considered to have the very best chin in the world at one point.
Hamsho blamed the weight of 160 for his '84 TKO loss to Hagler at MSG............ Whatever... Hagler wasted Hammy in the rematch......... Smoke job........ Peace... MR.BILL
Honest truth - he won plenty of best chin awards in boxing mags at one time. Bazooka Limon was regarded near with him, he used to poke out his tongue at times after taking rockets. Interestingly both chins failed late career, but jeez they had some wars/took some punches between them.
Out of interest how highly was Saad Muhummads chin rated,as he fought sort of in that era? He visited the canvas but he could absorb a sickening amount of punishment (the Lopez and Johnson fights were brutality personified) and like Limon and Hamsho his chin gave out eventually as well.
He was rated VERY high as well. I'll see if i can find one of the yearly rating mags next weekend and post some tidbits. They used to have a winner then bracket about 2-4 "honorable mentions".
Hamsho had a great chin, though he as notably hurt by Minter before the Hagler fights.Other than that mostly solid.
Eh, Limon was stopped a few times even before it gave out completely against Camacho. They were TKO's against obscure opposition so I'm not sure if he cut or what. What other fighters in the 80's were touted as having absolute iron chins?
Juan LaPorte has always rated highly when all time great chins are brought up but I can't remember if he was noted for that in the 80's or whether he got credit later on as his career was winding up. Barry Michael from Australia was another 80's fighter with a cast iron chin who's name seldom gets mentioned when great chins are brought up.
Exhibit A: Juan Laporte the guys he 12 or 15 rds with without touching the canvas Sal SancheZ 2x *Wifredo Gomez Euesebio Pedroza p>*Julio Cesar Chavez * *Kostya Tszyu- Laporte was passed IT and still was standing at the end</p> *muderous punchers and Laporte never went down once.
Sanchez had a very good chin, but Juan Escobar floored and nearly stopped him in their draw. And amazingly, they never rematched.
