Is hand or wrist size of any relevance to a fighter?

I read a tale of the tape for Hopkins V Tarver and his wrist measurement was 6". That's the same as my wrists and they are skinny as ****.

Also I remember a quote of Jake La Motta saying he had hands like a little girl.

Obviously it didn't hold these two back, but in general is it better for a fighter to have larger hands and connect with a larger area, or smaller hands and have his power more concentrated when he lands on a smaller area.

Or is it of no relevance at all?

Lew Jenkins had little girls hands, and buggy whips for arms, but he was one of the hardest hitting lightweights ever?

30's and 40's Was the lightweight champ for awhile. Liked to drink too much, and never trained. Knocked Lew Ambers senseless for the title, almost knocked a young Carmin Basilio out as an old man in the late 40's. Welter champ Fritzie Zivic beat Jenkins on a Dec, but in an article he said Jenkins hit him on top of the head and "he felt like the roof fell on him!, one of the hardest shots I ever was hit with". Pretty interesting guy. Was later a war hero in Korea later, winning the silver star.

The average wrist size is 5½ inches believe it or not.

    You're pretty average.

    I'm slightly over, at 6½.

Brittle hands are alot more dangerous to have than brittle wrists.
    They're also more common.

I know a dude who is short but has 6" wrists. He wrist curls 70 each hand.

I think shoulder and tricep strength has more to do with power than the size of wrists or fists. Also if you have a strong core, you'll be able to put more power into your punches.

Man are you part of some obsessive wrist measuring community? :D

Liston had, I believe, the biggest fist measurement, over 15"

smaller hands often lead to fractures...Jeff Fenech has tiny hands and claims it was the reason he broke them so much

Boxing pundits (ex boxers on TV) always seem like they have huge hands.

And every single one of them clasp them together when talking, seems to be boxer habit.

^ You think your wrists are tiny? Mine measure 5 3/4 inches. And no matter what I do my forearms just wont get bigger either. The fact that my upper arms are really big only further accentuates this.

yes fist size and wrist does make a difference in punching power. Bigger dimensions = different kind of impact.

No research has been carried out to properly evaluate if it means you punch hard or not. Plus take into account everyone is going to be wearing gloves same as each other.
