After the Margarito incident i read a poster on this forum suggesting that handwraps should always be checked after the fight, by the referee, to make sure they were legal. IMO , while this might catch illegal wraps, this catches them too late when the damage is already done. As I understand it, at the moment the boxers have their hands wrapped while the trainer of the opposing camp and an official are present, but in the Margarito fight the official completely missed the alledgedly illegal substances in the wraps and only because Mosley's trainer thought the wraps looked or felt fishy, Margarito was caught. My suggestions are the following : Why don't we make the wrapping of the hands part of the whole show? Just like the weigh-in is part of it? I am thinking along the following lines : Why don't we have the opposing parties submit the brands of gauze and tape and gloves they want to use to the officials before the fight, so they can be approved and aquired by the officials. Then prefight, the fighters would have to have their hands wrapped with the material provided by the officials, in the presence of the officials and the opposing camp, WHILE either in the ring or integrally televised from backstage, so everyone can see what is going on. Same would go for the gloves : bought by the officials to specifications of the fighters and checked prefight on camera with officials and the opposing camps trainer. In my mind this would reduce the chances of tampering with gloves and wraps to nearly zero. And keeping in mind what plaster wraps can do (Billy Collins) to me these precautions are worth it. Any thoughts?
here's a suggestion...why not place a representative of the opposing camp to observe the wrapping session...just like what roach did in the pac-hoya fight...and make it seen live on tv...
If we all followed the rules at all time we didn't need referees, doping tests or even police for that matter, my suggestion is aimed at upholding the rules. Is this seriously a weird proposal?
