No persecution complex, I just think that theres a lot of double standards & hypocrisy going on about Burns when you compare him to other WBO champs. Look at Chris Eubank for instance, regarded as a brit boxing legend on here. Some of his WBO defences were utterly awful, but hes a legend! Ricky Hattons WBU defences, Joe Calzaghes defences, not one of them took on the best in every defence, but that was OK! However when Burns has defences against the non elite of the sport? Mutiny ensues!!!

Its just double standards, hypocrisy & sour grapes IMO, Laryea earned his shot by whupping Apples. Not Burns fault that a hot prospect suffered a shock defeat. Burns had to go through hell to beat Martinez, & the posters here expect him to fight the elite in every defence? Thats not how boxing works, & they know it. Hypocrites.

Burns going down to England to fight Cook is a dodgy one, as a prime Alex Arthur found out. So for anyone to say its a joke defence? I aint buying it...
But fair play to you & brummylad for at least being honest, I dont have a problem with that. Its just that not every poster thinks like you two...

the biggest issue i have with burns shitty defences is that he could genuinely beat guys like fana, litzau that are ranked in the top 10 and carve out a real solid resume and legacy. he would probably start making more cash to.

but instead we are getting joke after joke.

theres no double standard. people were as critical of calzaghes, eubank and other champs **** opponents as anyone else. bringing up hattons wbu days shows how nuts you are.

nobody expects him to fight the elite. we just expect him to fight a decent class of opponent which he hasnt so far in his 2 defences.

are you trying to say arthur was robbed against cook who was fighting further away from his hometown than alex and infront of about 10 of his fans?

its a joke defence because its been 3 years since cook had a competative fight.

This thread is comedy gold. Just to summarise......

It started with the hypocrosy of Nelson calling another fighters opponent a disgrace when his #1 charge is preparing to face a domestic level fighter who has fought 6 rounds in 2 years in a World title contest after his previous (and only) 2 defenses were against an afrobum and a Norweigan Circus midget.

it then carries on with him ignoring every point offered to him unless it somehow fits his agenda that we're all 'anti scottish' haters of Burns and jealous that his small nation can produce a World champion (despite the fact we have a few of our own - a few who actually fight other world champions and world ranked fighters)

New light then comes to the thread in the form of information that Billy nelson is in fact English and not Scottish.

Dunky then jumps on the bandwagon with his claims that Burns beat the No1 ranked fighter in the world (not the particular sanctioning body - THE WORLD) and refuses to accept that people actually like Burns they just find it hypocritical that his trainer is coming on here ridiculing another fighters level of opposition.

Thread comes to a climax with Dunky calling 'jonesy' (long established ESB veteran Rob Palmer) a newbie several times.

    /thread

On a side note, as much as I like Burns and have said many times on here i think he can do very well, i do start to find myself wanting him to lose just out of the fact that it would stop this pish I have to listen to time and again on here which is a real shame as he seems a good lad.
    Anybody agree???

I think where Billy fell down was the ''Laryea would beat most 130lb'ers in the UK.

    That's kinda faint praise.

If you look at the 126-135lb classes there's at least a dozen British fighters that would be very strongly favoured to dominate and probably stop Laryea. He had an OK-ish jab, but it was painfully obvious watching him against Appleby and Burns that all you had to do was just keep whacking away to the body and eventually he will go over.

It's pretty clear that most people on here like Burns, and having defeated Martinez - who is a bit..... meh.... but was still probably amongst the top five in that division relatively easily want to see him in there with the best fighters.

What is particularly galling is that there are several domestic fighters (by that I mean British, not necessarily their level) that would have tested him far more than either Evensen or Laryea actually did, and it gives them an opportunity to knock someone off their perch and gain a bit of publicity.

Quite a few people actually defended these two fights, saying that Burns is champion and is entitled to bed in with a few easy defences and make a few quid. I've nothing against him (or anyone else) making money, but you can't call yourself a world champion if you aren't fighting world class fighters.

Cook is a slight improvement granted, in that he has actually got some form at European class, albeit at 126lbs, but surely Buckland is more deserving, with his KO win over the current British champion at the weight?

But no, beating an ice cream salesman from Dewsbury gets you a world title fight, whilst Buckland continues to be avoided by everybody :-(

    Tremendous.

I guess Cook earned his shot by beating Al-Hamidi? If the poor bugger had a bit more luck in these unofficial WBO 'final eliminators' he could be world champion by now.

Looking at Boxrec it looks like Buckland has had to travel to Mexico to find someone that's not ducking him.

I didn't realise he was on the Canelo-Rhodes card. :patsch

Speaking as someone whose half Scottish, has supported Burns and stands to win a sizeable sum if he finishes the year undefeated I find mylself agreeing. I don't expect Billy to bite the hand that feeds him so to speak but he does himself and Burns no favours on here as the majority of comments haven't been anti him, Burns or Scotland, just the level of opposition which there isn't any excuse for.
