This content is protected This is a clip from 1987 when he turned 21. At that time, the road ahead looked extremely promising for him. Everyone thiught "Man, when he's 25 or 26 and in his prime, he'll be unstoppable." Sadly, it turns out he was already in his prime and at the pinnacle of his success. Tyson was the youngest ever heavyweight champion, made 9 successful title defenses and went a better part of 5 years undefeated and people still expected more because he was so good that even accomplishing the above, many feel he still never lived up to his full potential.
Did Tyson once said he'd never make 50? Mike seems to have mellowed a bit and become a good ambassador for boxing. I saw some of Tyson's greatest hits II, Mike could sure punch, but the hype around him looking back was a bit extreme.
Its it just me, or did he appear much more arrogant after he beat Berbick? Anyway, very good video that I´ve never seen before.
He was the total package for a heavy IMO. I think youth was his curse in a way. If his prime was in his mid 20s to early 30s and he had to struggle more to get to the top, he'd not gotten sidetracked. And we can't rule out undiagnosed and untreated mental issues
He certainly was giving Tyson alot of approval. This content is protected Was Mike actually in Brenners show in 1979 too?
Strange to think if Tyson gets to his 80 s he ll be the elder statesman of heavy weight boxing !Wonder how people will view him in about 30 years time ??
In a tyson thread on the General forum I stated that Mike the persona transcends Mike the fighter. He was (and still is) an icon that transcended not just boxing but sport in general. He was the last of the great heavyweight champions at a time when the Heavyweight Champion of the World was still the greatest prize in all of sports. I was a teenager when Mike burst onto the scene and then became the champ. It’s almost impossible to articulate the impact that he had. The only other person I can think of that is comparable is Michael Jackson after Thriller came out. And of course it’s ironic that Mike Tyson is still alive while Michael Jackson isn’t.
