Biggs'y 54 today. Seen some photo's from last week..looking well, training youngsters at the Shepards gym in West Philly. Turned pro 30 years ago last month in front of 21000 fans at MSG alongside all the other Olympic 84 stars.. Whittaker, Breland , Holyfield etc.. Had his troubles but hangin in there...
Happy Birthday, Tyrell.Understand he was a pretty good prep basketball player also.Keep up the faith.
He was Titan.By his own admission though the college life that went with the Basketball got him in with the wrong crowd and drugs . Only put that behind him once he turned pro. Had other issues but a genuinely good guy.
Ken....They did actually have a reunion dinner evening earlier this year i believe. There are some photos around on the internet somewhere...if you google Tyrell there is a facebook link to the documentary they were or are making on his life (there have been funding difficulties)..its a community project.. there is a facebook link there with photos. Ty looks pretty good..although he got over the drugs there have been alchohol issues. He still looks an imposing figure.Sadly any wealth has long gone,he had a house in Newport beach Cal, when he was fighting...after retirement he lived out of a suitcase taking various sparring and training assignments...now back home with his elderley father in the house where he started off...but at least he is keeping a focus with the coaching of the young guys...the gym had produced fighters like Jesse Hart. I always think that health issues apart, the fact that guys like this do all that they did and end up broke is the saddest aspect. Ty will always be my boxing hero. He wasnt the best and lacked the mentality and basic power needed to beat the best.I was always impressed by the fact that he was the one fighter who fought Tyson at his peak who genuinely thought he could win and went in with a plan to do so.That fight though systematically dismantled his confidence and he was never the same again. He had a horrible knack of meeting guys at their peak and in some ways he was badly managed. It all comes back to money i suppose....hence the sadness that he's now broke ! So many sad endings with these guys so im hoping he hangs in there !
It will probably be debated FOREVER which was better the boxing Olympic class of 1976, OR 1984??:huh.... The one thing that stands out about 84, was the way Holyfield was robbed by the ref, Kevin Barry fight, ill never forget that BS....:-(
LOL! 30 years!! And here I was thinking its 20 years but it only seem like yesterday and its really 30 years. Man, where did all the years go??
I don't know. It's crazy, isn't it? Seems like maybe a couple of years ago I was watching the 84 Olympians debut on prime time network tv. Not 30 or even 20.
Sweetsci + ken... They say that time goes by quicker as you get older and i'm starting to be able to vouch for that myself !
