that may be your perception of what english boxers represent, but when i watched benn ,eubank, mcmillian, hamed etc ,all i ever seen was entertaining fighters and because all we had was 4 channels it was all you had, it became natural to support these fighters, as my fathers generation did before that. where abouts in belfast are you from.
I grew up in the west, in Glengoland Park; I now live down the city centre. I supported Liverpool as a kid, but always seemed to be sat by my dad's side rooting against British boxers and the England football team; thats just the way it was for me; it may be a bit of a genralisation but I know that there were plenty of others both inside and outside of my family doing the same thing (my family all came from the Whiterock area). As I said, things are different now; I'm really big into my boxing, and talking with the guys in here opens up different doors for me (enlightens me somewhat). I'm from a different generation than my Dad (obviously) and once I got out from under his wing I became more liberal in my views; my Dad's a great guy in my eyes, but he just comes from a different era from me and has experienced more that would prejudice him against certain things. I always was for the guy who was fighting Hamed, Eubank and Benn, but now love to watch Nigel's fight and have become a huge fan; I don't like Hamed and Eubank due to their arrogance, but that is true for a lot of people (whatever nationality they are - ****, both those guys played on that factor themselves). But I now appreciate them for the skills they showed in the ring. I'm not on this forum to gain brownie points from anyone, or to make everyone my mate; I've had quite a few scraps already (internet warrior style). What I said in my post I really meant, and I'm sorry if it came across bad for you; that was just the score as far as I could see it.
fair enough, i know what you mean about aul lads.my da would describe himself as a republican with a small "r",but hes never really been anti anything but simply pro irish. i suppose he passed them politics along to me.dont get me wrong i would often vote sinn fein[ when i can bother my arse to go round to the polling station and vote] but politics isnt that important to me. enjoy the rest of your christmas and good luck to big rogie and martin lindsay in 2009
Well, I'm not going to get into this debate about the sporting preferences of Irish Republicans, because I wouldn't know what to say, but, every nation or nationality has its sporting prejudices. Try and find an Englishman who supports Boca Juniors or Bayern Munich or rooted for Sven Ottke to become the P4P king. Perhaps in Ireland those political or cultural prejudices were/are a bit sharper, a bit more prominent. As for Hamed's arrogance; I personally see it as being significantly different to Eubank's - which was actually more of a genuine personality trait, IMO. I think Hamed is a more of a charecter, a persona, a front that he put on for the crowds, he was a showman, and a product of his times; the in-ya-face, pompous late 90's bull****. From what I've read and heard (see the commentary for the Kelley fight & the press conference for the Vasquez fight) behind the scenes he is actually a quiet, reflective and polite guy, he also, almost without exception, backed up his boasts in the ring. :bbb
Thats cool mate:good Your Dad sounds like a real good sort, and I'm glad you grew up around a guy that was like that. If everyone was like your Dad, the patriotic Irish streak without the hatred for others, then the country we live in would be a much better place. This will sound corny as hell but for me my Dad is not just my father he's also my best mate, but that doesn't blind me to his faults. I love him to bits, but I'm happy that I'm different from him in certain ways. Nowadays I'll give anyone a fair crack of the whip, doesn't matter what colour, nationality or religion they are; you get good guys and bad guys everywhere, not just within a certain group. Hope you have a great time over the Xmas period.:good I'm sorry we got into this argument in the first place.
Hey GH:good I personally think they both played on the alternate personality thing to sell more tickets; I know that a lot of people tuned in or turned up at the arena just to see them get beat. Maybe you have more info on Eubank that I have; looking back on it now, I just can't believe that either of them were truly like that in everyday life. They were both top-notch operators though; I can't fault them for their skills in the ring.
ok, there was numerous occasions when i was young born in 82 where guys wearing english football jerseys were told to remove them or get battered in my estate, i was chased out of my cousins estate in finglas because i was wearing a leeds utd jersey, this was around 92 i was 10 and the 3 guys must of been late teens early 20's, shouting get out of here you english ******* even though they heard me talking in a dub accent 2 minutes before this maybe they just hated leeds
