Because of his height and reach.

This is why Vitali would have been beaten up by Fury.
Kevin Johnson marked him up, imagine what Fury would do to his face.
Try leaning back against Fury's reach.
It's a bit different to fighting 6ft wonders.
Fury had a lot more head movement and defensive moves, so he could get away with a low guard more and showed he could actually avoid 99% of shots from someone his own proportions like Wilder (first fight), who is actually fast at that size too. When Vitali fought someone his own size in Lewis his head couldn't be missed.

Fury would definitely have been a bad stylistic matchup for him, and not just because of height.
IMO, the Hoffman fight proves that it wasn´t just about size with Vitali. But at the same time it highlights how heavily Vitali relied on his height as shorter guys would not have been able to land the shots Hoffman landed.
Hoffman was a decent, EBU level guy.

Many, Fury would have been a nightmare for Vitali.

Fighters such as Roy Jones, Vitali Klitschko, and Sergio Martinez was able to master that style. The key is to have a combination of elite speed, power and reflexes. Without those you may very well get KO’d in those tight fights.

I’d argue it’s iq and composure, the best footwork in the world is worthless (without iq) if you use it to walk into traps.
It’s all worth nothing if you panic in the ring.
I’m just playing devils advocate here iam pretty much with you on footwork.
But the thing that sets the real champions apart from the rest is composure, which is almost unflinchingly obvious see Crawford, Usyk, Canelo.
I bring it up all the time and I will continue to do so probably forever, but the greatest display of a fighter with no guard was Derevyanchenko against Mbilli. This was forced on him by tearing his bicep in the fourth round and he fought on at 36 years of age with no lead hand and no guard with no chance of victory against a beast of a fighter in Mbilli.
He kept going and took his licks like a champ.
If you haven’t seen it already and you are looking for a recent fight to watch, this is the one. I’ve watched it 4 times already.
