There is a difference between in shape and boxing shape. The fitness models you see could not even hit the pads for 2 rounds without gassing out much less be able to fight, much less be able to fight for 12 rounds.

Just the road work alone in boxing would kill most people, and that's just the beginning. Then you gotta step in the gym and actually work.

hell no. 200 rounds of sparring in 5 weeks? God damn, no wonder tyson was so relaxed when he entered the ring when it was actually time to fight.

IMO, working a 9-5 job and finding the time to exercise and stay in shape is much more impressive then someone doing intense training when that is exactly what they are PAID to do. There are many boxers out their that train their ass off just like Mayweather while having to work other jobs because no matter what they do or how much they train they won't have that natural ability of a Jones Jr, Mayweather, or Tyson. People don't post pictures up of them and admire their bodies and talk about their work ethic. For **** sakes. Mayweather is the highest paid athlete and has made millions upon millions for fighting once a year. Why is it so respected or admired that he comes in the ring in shape? If you told me to get in the shape of my life for 40 million dollars I would do it and you would see me training my ass off everyday in the gym. However I don't have that natural talent of a Mayweather, like most people don't, and I wouldn't make it at a world class level. I admire his in ring ability. But drooling and admiring someone for being in shape when that is their only responsibility seems odd to me.

No ****. But people drool over these boxers pictures and talk about how amazing their body is and how they can push themselves so far. I find their in ring work and boxing mind amazing during a fight. I don't find them actually working out and staying in shape special since they make so much damn money to do it. Their are people who work hard, back breaking jobs, that exercise and stay at a good fitness level without the luxuries these big time boxers have. I just find it ammusing that we worship these people.

no one gets paid to train numbnuts. mma fighters work their asses off and some only make like 7K a fight, as opposed to some fat crooked copper driving around in a police car all day. yeah, real tough job

Other way around, fighters pay gym fees to train.

I see where you're coming from but I think anybody who puts in extra work when he doesn't have to, deserves appreciation. Now I can't make the claim that Floyd trains harder than any other fighter because I haven't been in the gym with every fighter in the world, but I do hear this claim consistently from fighters who watched him train. I think it's for a reason. He does things that normal fighters don't do and that's why people are praising him.

But I agree that a person who works two jobs and takes care of their kids arguably works harder than Floyd.

And you cans stop right there.

The flaw in your logic is that 99.99% of all pro fighters barely make enough to keep going. (Actually, most have day jobs to pay for their training.)

What's impressive is that these guys put the work in, day after day, despite the fact that their chances of ever actually making a nice payday are monumentally small.

Additionally, I assume you've never been a serious athlete, correct? If you had been, you'd understand how insanely hard it it to train (& maintain nutrition, etc) at world-class level. It's not a 40hr / week job. It's a 24/7 job. You literally have no idea. (And yes, I do, as a former Ams MW and US national team cyclist)

When you get at the level of Mayweather it's funny you keep defending him being in shape as some kind of miracle. Sure, their are lazy boxers out their but if I was fighting once a year making 60 million a fight and had to not worry about working a 9-5 job and had servants to do my day to day stuff for me, it wouldn't be a miracle if I was in top shape all the time. If you don't consider a big pay day like that for a training camp that only lasts usually 6-8 weeks as part of getting paid for going to the gym then that's you, not me. A fighter like James Toney has a raw, natural talent for boxing and could outclass almost anyone even when he wasn't in shape at all. Floyd has that same raw ability that most, including boxers who work just as hard, will never have. Am I gonna admire him because he stays in shape? Hell no.
