My God both concrete hagler was the better fighter but chin wise don't think anyone near their weight in history could shift them.
Rewatched Eubank-Benn and Hagler-Mugabi tonight and was still dumbstruck by the punches to the head they took without wincing. Eubank could be hurt to the body, though.
Watch the shots Hearns dropped Cuevas and Duran on their faces with. That's the same right Tommy caught Marv walking into, and it was the Hearns right hand which broke. Now that's frightening, when one of your weapons against your opponent's fists is actually your head. He likely had a James Toney HW chin.
One could perhaps say that Hagler's chin is more proven. At least at MW. Did Eubank face any serious banger besides Benn?
Definitely Hagler, Eubank was hurt numerous times against the likes of Benn, Watson, Calzaghe. Never really seen Hagler hurt at all.
I don't even think he was too stunned against Hearns, Mugabi and Roldan both landed bombs against him but when the going got tough the tough got going.
Hagler was taking flush right hands from Thomas Hearns in that first round of their thriller, and appeared to just shake them off and walk through them. And Hearns famously broke his right hand from hitting Hagler high on the head, near the end of the first round.
It wasn't. Juan shoved down on the back of his head, and notoriously incompetent referee Tony Perez "ruled it a clean knockdown," just as he once had Wepner flooring Ali by stepping on his foot. Hagler indicated before Hearns that Cyclone Hart hit him with a hook after the bell which was the hardest he'd ever been hit. Don't know where he rates Tommy's right in comparison. Safe to say Hagler's chin is far more proved. The best piece of competitive evidence he actually could be hurt was when he reeled around the ring in pain following the clash of heads in the Antuofermo rematch which cost Vito the gash ending that bout.
Hagler-Mugabe was a monstrous war, The Beast's best career performance, and a rare instance where the loser seemed to lose his punch afterwards. People forget what a fearsome puncher Mugabe was going into that challenge. The only two challengers Hagler defended against who were NOT known for their punching power were Antuofermo and Hamsho. Just getting to Hagler could be difficult, as he ruled over a loaded division. Guys like Frank Fletcher, Curtis Parker and James "Hard Rock" Green couldn't even get to him. A MW had to be good just to win the USBA or NABF Titles.
The most stunned I've seen him, was I think against Hart. It was the end of some round and he got caught with a really hard shot. I don't think he was "hurt", but it was the closest I've seen him to being hurt. The hard shots he absorbed from Mugabi were very impressive. He took hard shots upstairs as well as to the body, he was urinating blood afterwards. Not only did he take them well, but it didn't seem to slow him down either. His energy level looked very good in the 11th when he ended the fight. Just to add, I do think it gets exaggerated when people say he took Hearns's "best shots". He took some good shots from Hearns, but Hearns's best shot was when he got distance for the right hand and got real leverage behind it (Cuevas, Duran, Shuler). The shot that briefly stunned Hagler early on was a short uppercut and then a looping overhand right, at close distance. Hearns did catch Hagler with some right hands later on with more distance, but Hearns didn't put as much behind them, his legs weren't planted, although he managed to land some looping right hands around Hagler's guard which had more behind them. Knowing Hagler's punch resistance, my guess is that he would have been able to take Hearns's straight right even if Hearns got more distance and leverage on them.
