Hearns had the better explosive, 1-punch power, even from a p4p perspective, imo. 2 x ATG punchers & fighters, though.

Completely agree. Arguello hit harder with the left tho. Hearns hook was hard but Arguello's comfortably surpassed it.

Hearns stopped a light heavy and stopped a middleweight with one punch in the first round, Arguello couldn`t hurt Pryor when he moved up to 140, Hearns destroyed Duran in the 2nd round at 154 nothing Arguello done can match that.

Hearns also melted down from God knows what his real weight is like so many Kronk fighters Moorer, Gerald etc.

Which really weakens you. Those same Kronk fighters were well-schooled in throwing hard punches if you're looking for a common denominator in why they might have been such good punchers.

Do you honestly think losing an unnatural amount of weight then regaining it in a mere 36 hours - 12 in Hearns' case for most of his early career when his power was truly frightening - gives you that much of an advantage? If your ideal fighting weight is about 168 but you weighed 147 the day before, I honestly doubt it's going to help you.

It obviously worked for him didn’t it? Moorer Gman and Hearns came down to dangerous levels IMO and in Gerald’s case… I think it had everything to do with being huge for their weight and throwing proper punches doesn’t hurt.

I like Tommy but Arguello had pop.

Agree JT but in the 2nd rd of the Duran fight' Tommy throws a hook that just misses. It is the fastest punch I have ever seen. He had thrown the same hook about ten seconds earlier - that missed, too - which was very quick but not like what followed. And not just speed but snap on them. They weren't arm punches. He turned his hip into it.

If either of those had landed, it would have been night night. Honestly. Both looked more devastating than the right hand which finished the fight.

Speaking of Tommy, check this from Arsenio. Who knew Tommy was this charismatic?

Problam with Hearns was that his speaking voice wasn`t smooth, he slurred a lot of his words.

Yes, Mark. That really affected his power.

Debate over folks. The Eloquent Thin Man wins this one.

He sounds like most of my family members from Detroit..............I understand him perfectly, you may just not understand the regional dialect/accent :ohno

Original question: I've admittedly only seen a handful of Arguello fights, but I never really considered him as a "hitter". Not like how Tommy did at WW.

Sorry Eddie i was going to reply to this within a day but a heap of prime hog came up at work and I've been trying to catch up in here ever since.

I know the hook you are talking about, indeed. I have never seen Hearns with as much snap and venom as he had in that Duran demolition and man I've seen him numerous times with LOADS of it. Adding to your post Hagler used to wax lyrical about what a great left hook Tommy had.

What Arguello has that Tommy doesn't tho is numerous examples of immense left hooks, one punch ko's, fight altering punches etc.

But i agree with your general hint, Tommy's left hook gets a bit undersold.

I only saw this clip in more recent years and was also surprised by Hearns’ outgoing nature and sense of fun. Good stuff.
