Harder To Stop Part II: Best Chin & Defence - Peak Mayweather or Peak Whitaker?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by DINAMITA, Dec 27, 2008.

  1. I'd say Floyd... He's one of the hardest S.O.B's alive to hit, Hatton caught him once at the beginning of their fight with a brilliant relfex left jab/hook, dont remember him landing any more flush shots all night...

Pernell was athletically maybe one of the most gifted (he is) in history - along with Pep, but Floyd technically is far more sound - he uses his athleticism, but is technically sound enough to work through his athleticism...

Floyd is "technically far more sound"?

I think that is a very silly comment. How exactly is he?

This is such a difficult question.

Pernell has mindblowing defense where you find yourself laughing out loud audibly at the way he slips punches and makes the opponent look like an amateur. He has the kind of defense I show to people who don't watch boxing so they can be amazed also.

Floyd has a very functional defense which finds him absorbing punches, blocking and countering in close, shoulder rolling.

Both men have proven that they can take a punch and keep going. I believe Pernell has been down more, so maybe Floyd for the chin? So difficult to say because it is not a liability at all for either man.

I'm gonna go get drunk right now at the bar watching the cage fighting and I'll think about it when everything makes sense.

Conversely, doesn't a past-prime Whitaker taking punishment from naturally bigger, stronger fighters like Trinidad and Vasquez provide hard evidence that he had a better chin than Mayweather?

More like absolutely pathetic, inept offensive work from N'dou.MAyweather barely even had to try.

Not that Mayweather can't do god work against the ropes, but N'dou brought nothing to the table.

 Well, that's the other side of the coin. Are you a bit of a glass half empty sort of chap?

Nah, I know what you're saying, N'Dou wasn't really throwing with any accuracy or conviction. I was just very impressed by Mayweather's technique in not even being tagged once despite how close N'Dou was. Not many currently active fighters would lie on the ropes and allow an opponent to tee off on them, having such confidence in their defensive capabilities.

I would say that what it does is prove that Whitaker had an excellent chin, but doesn't necessarily suggest that his chin is better than Mayweather's.

You can flip a coin in terms of chins because I'm not convinced either has a better one. I'm also so torn between them in terms of their defensive capabilities....

Wish I could contribute more on this one, but I'll have to hold off from voting for now. It's not even that I haven't had time to think about it, because I compare these two regularly.

I'd put Sweet Pea slightly ahead, mostly on the strength of the fact that it's easier to avoid a KO while dodging punches than blocking/deflecting them, (there's always the chance you won't be able to block or deflect one killer shot, especially from a fighter who puts speed and power together) and because a washed up Sweet Pea went the distance with Trinidad at welter during a time when Trinidad was knocking out everyone who stepped in the ring with him, regardless of how tough they were or what a great chin they had.

    Pernell Whitaker, no question.
Better everything than Mayweather including attitude.
(Except Power @ the lower weights)

I find it difficult to split them.
