I want to give a heads up for this site over on you tube. The fellow who set it up apparently put the yearly Ring Magazine Rankings in a computer. He goes through champions and challengers and totals up how many ranked fighters, top three ranked fighters, and champions his subject has fought.

His subjects include champions and contenders in every weight class, so there is a lot of information here. His technique is to go through a fighter's career 20 fights at a time listing who was/is a Hall of Famer, champion, top three contender, or ever ranked contender.

There are some weaknesses. There is no distinction drawn between ever rated and rated at the time of the fight with the subject. He relies on The Ring's annual rankings, which are not month by month and are by a magazine.

But there is a treasure trove of information, especially on classes below heavyweight.

For example, here is some information given on Maxie Rosenbloom

    Total record--224 wins, 44 losses, 29 draws, with 19 KO's

Record against champions--17 wins, 13 losses, 6 draws

Record against top three rated fighters--35 wins, 24 losses, 11 draws

Record against ever rated fighters--80 wins, 40 losses, 23 draws

That is some resume, isn't it.

So I want to give a heads up to dip into this site and see what you think.

I can reach it by typing in "Hardline Boxing Talk" over at you tube. You can add a name, such "Hardline Boxing Talk, Joe Louis" if you want to find out information about a specific fighter. I just discovered this site yesterday but am enjoying browsing through it

I have just locked on to the site on YouTube, and see that the latest video is Naoya Inoue Is No ATG!

I tried to watch the video, but gave up after about 15 minutes! When the main argument seems to be, that those who rate Inoue very highly are basically idiots, with no knowledge of boxing history... well, when I see bias like that, I just lose interest.

You're right... if one looks at his All-Time Top-100, it seems like the number of pro fights weighs very heavily on his rankings. It's quite strange to see Sugar Ray Leonard at 77 - 59 places below Fritzie Zivic in 18th place! Just one example of the weirdness to be found here:

Inoue is a legit ATG. Might be the best fighter in the world right now. Sheesh, give the man his due.

Of course ranking your top 1000 is pretty ridiculous in itself.

I guess Joe Frazier only having 37 fights is a real crusher.

    It's a tricky question though!

In most sports the stars are playing more games/matches, the leagues have taken measures to make games more competitive (like salary caps, draft picks, etc), while boxing has gone the other way.

Yes but you can still find a way to rank without 500 fights and btw I definitely think the old timers were generally better.
