The nephew of Trevor Berbick and another individual were convicted of killing the former heavyweight champion of the world. The nephew, Harold Berbick was convicted of murder while his accomplice Kenton Gordon was found guilty of manslaughter. Harold and Kenton beat Trevor to death and left the body in a church courtyard. The argument and beating apparently arose because of a land dispute. Trevor Berbick was deported from the United States in 2002 and was also the last fighter to face Muhammad Ali in the ring. Trevor Berbick held the WBC Heavyweight Championship in 1986 but lost the title to Mike Tyson. Trevor Berbick was 54 years old.
I was a close friend of the late Johnny Tocco , Johhny was part of team Berbick in the mid eighties when he was champ. I met Trevor once and he was a likeable guy.. Very amusing actually, he was also a quite respectable puncher , something no one actually asscociates with Berbick.. He once hit the mitts for Slim Jim Robertson in Toccos, Jim took the mitts off and his hands were very red and sore, he told me that Trevor really could have been a far better champ if Mike wasn't around.. He cut trevors reign short.. The Carl Williams fight was the night he said himself " I should go find something else to do.." He did have a traumatic time later in his career, he was not that articulate and started to slurr a little as well as acting quirky and irrattic.. I hate great athletes who realy weren't bad people finding such a terrible demise.. God bless.. RIP.. Israel Trevor Berbick..
What a terrible story. Killing someone is obviously a horrible thing, but his own family?!?! That is as bad as it gets..
