I've always been a big fan of Harold Johnson. I was enraged when he lost the decision to Pastrano. But as I have continued to watch boxing over the years, including films of all the HJ fights I have been able to get ahold of, I have concluded that while he was a master technician in the moment, he approached all fights pretty much the same and never seemed to have a plan as a fight wore on. Other great strategists like Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson had a better sense of the end game by always looking to increase their dominance as the fight wore on. Johnson, on the other hand, always seemed to live in the moment. He was content to win the battle of each exchange without giving much thought about how the fight should progress or end. You might argue it was caution and a realization that his chin wasn't too rugged, but I think it was also because he lacked the imagination and foresight of the ATGs.
