Well i mean it dosen't really apply because the fighters back then had way way less body fat, nowadays with all the advancements you'd think the fighters would be able to have unbelievable stamina and low body fat but no, guess new isn't always better.
Saying Marciano didn't look like Johnson because he didn't have a fat percentage as low as him is totally stupid. JG said it right, genetics is what will ultimatley determine how someone looks, Johnson was most likely an extreme mesomorph while Rocko was endomorphic. I've seen photos of my dad back when he was in his prime and did boxing, karate and soccer on a regular basis, had not a single ounce of fat on him but also barely had a single line of definition. Genetics.
Also, as bodybuilders will tell you, skin tone (and body hair) means a lot. Darker skin shows striations and definition better. Thus, so many of the caucasian builders fake and bake to a ridiculous degree. I think Rocky had a very, very low body fat percentage when he was fit. He really was an animal. Yeah, if Marciano painted himself mahogany/bronze like a bodybuilder, not only would his bodyfat percentage be significantly lowered but he'd automatically get a ton of 'slick' and 'skill' credits for being black.
This content is protected Well, it wouldn't literally affect bodyfat levels, but a darker skin tone does generally show up striations better, which leads to the illusion that their BF percentage is lower than it really is. As for making one slicker and more skillful, well duh, of course it would.
The guy is obviously genetically gifted. Long hours in the gym has worked on his natural attributes but zero doubt he is cut perfect through being born with a natural physical advantage.
Harold had a good natural structure, good muscularity. Natural training is very genetic dependent. "Modern training" isn't. A lot of very ignorant opinions in regards to training in this thread.
John Garfield had it correct from the start. Muscles will develop, but bones and tendon insertion points (etc.) stay roughly the same. A man with small hands will always have small hands. That's size, anyway. I'm less clear on what constitutes 'definition', but it's obvious that some people have it and some don't.
This article states that Harold Johnson said he didn't use weights http://www.eastsideboxing.com/weblog/news.php?p=16558&more=1
It's funny with Marciano if you saw him walking along the beach you probably wouldn't even think the man did any exercise let alone that he was one of the fittest men that ever lived with an inhuman amount of dedication. Not just when it comes to training but dieting all year round, celibacy, isolating himself to train, no alcohol, no drugs, not dabbling into any of the exploits that came with being Champion of the World. Nothing. True single minded dedication. This content is protected
