I think Quarry would stop him. Quarry, believe it or not, was more versatile. Johnson was only reactionary. A pure counterpuncher. A great one, but he couldnt fight if he had to make the fight. Quarry could counterpunch as well, could fight going forward, could bang, was very durable, I just dont see Johnson taking this. When you factor in Johnson's suspect chin and his lack of hw firepower I cant really see him taking this fight. He beat some good heavyweights but I think Quarry is wrong for him stylistically and more to the point if Quarry is going to beat a great fighter its likely going to be someone like a Johnson, smaller, not a big puncher, with a suspect chin, and not overly busy or aggressive. Quarry could fight at his pace, land the heavier artillery, not have to worry about getting stopped and be the guy making the fight. Its just all wrong for Johnson. Barring a fluke cut Quarry takes this either by decision or KO.

Not all that familiar will Johnson, he was smaller then Quarry by 2". Jerry probably wins that fight. He gave Joe Frazier a hell of a fight in their 1st meeting in 1969, June 23. I actually went to see that fight on Closed Circuit TV in Trenton, NJ. Had to take a train from New Brunswick, I was only 16 at the time. Went with a friend who liked boxing, too. It was in a big theater in Trenton & only $6.50 to get in. Quarry was doing well until Joe made a bloody mess of his face & it was stopped mid way through.

I go with Quarry. I think he would be too strong for Johnson.

I suggest you by the book "Hard Luck" based on Jerry Quarry's life/career. I really good read. You can pick it up fairly cheap on eBay.

Quarry in his prime was one athletic 195 lb monster, he did everything better than Johnson, who needs to stay in with they 175 pounders , Quarry's arsenal when he put those big guys away was something to see.

Quarry sorta got a bad rap from the writers BUT A GREAT FIGHT WITH WILLIS EARLS , JERRY WON LIKE 7-0-3 (100-93.) 10 POINT MUST, THE NEXT YOU HEARD ABOUT EARLS HE WAS RANKED # 5 LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT IN THE WORLD.

Top post.Moore said," Harold makes you do all the work".Completely true he was a reactive fighter, feeding off his opponent.

You are aware that Johnson beat a prime Machen while Quarry lost to a washed up Machen? You make it seem like this is just a mismatch when it really isn't.

Not a mismatch, but Quarry had just 20 fights and was only 21.
