2 ATG LHWs who have common opponents (Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore). Marshall practically fought everyone but just missed out on facing Johnson. How does the technician Johnson deal with the skills and athletic style of Lloyd Marshall? This content is protected This content is protected
Harold Johnson is a bit bigger is a slight level above based on the quality of his wins. He probably outboxes him behind a simple jab, Marshall was a bit more tricky and slick by the looks of it, but Johnson would neutralise that imo, being slick and tricky won’t help when you’re on the end of a jab, you need other tools in that scenario, like quick feet to close the distance and aggression in the right moments to catch them off guard over the jab.
Johnson did fight 2 guys known for their tricky unorthodox style (Marty Marshall and Henry Hank) and was able to beat them quite clearly. Perhaps it would be similar against Lloyd Marshall.
Bump, I feel this went under the radar and do feel this is a great talking point of a matchup. I do think Marshall could give Johnson plenty of issues with his unorthodox style, countering the jab with right and slipping side to side and exploding with that left and generally doing unorthodox moves to set up attacks over the top and around the jab. This could easily be one of those where they exchange wins, but I do still favour Johnson, but upon close inspection, I think Marshall gives Johnson more issues than I thought, I definitely think he could’ve beaten Billy Conn had he fought him.
