Well, Johnson was a natural lightheavyweight, and a very strong one at that. Hagler was a natural middleweight, who like Monzon, wisely stayed in the division in which he was the best. This leads up to me taking Johnson here...by a points, decisively, I might add. Johnson would have negated Hag's relentlessness, using his technical prowess to the tee....plus, he had enough respectable power to keep Marvin honest, while countering with precision. He would be just too big, smart, strong and defensively savvy for Marvin. Nothing close to a kd would occur, and no foolish moves or mistakes made by either man, as the respect level would just be too high here. The good big man beats the good small man.
he had respectable power to keep marvin honest?? the hitman hits harder than johnson and marvin walked right through him. johnson was much better technically but his hands wasn't that fast and his footwork wasn't that fast. johnson normally just stood in front of his opponents and timed their punches. leonard beat him by throwing combos and dancing out of range before marvin started to fire off. hagler would maul johnson IMO, i also think carmen basilio can beat johnson
I didn't imply that Johnson would stop Hagler, did I? And you think Johnson couldn't punch? Marvin would maul the bigger man?
Marvin Hagler, as good a MW as he was, would never see the day that he would of challenged, let alone beat the 15 pound heavier Harold Johnson... Nor Michael Spinks, nor Mathew Sadd Franklin...A bridge too far for Marvin.
Marvin wasn't a big mw despite his long reach. He never looked bigger than hearns or Leonard. 160 through and through.
Johnson kept the 6'3" 210 Nino Valdez off him and he can't keep Hagler off? Hagler never beat a decent fighter Johnsons size let alone a great one.
Harold was too good in the 175-190 class and he beat many....tough match for Marvin who was one of the kings of 160 but like the great Monzon that is where he belonged
Yeah, Marvin goes up...all the way up to lightheavyweight.... and fights a guy as powerful looking as Johnson? Harold Johnson's strength translated to functional strength as well.
