rc, this is why a Fitz, a prime Jack Dillon, a Sam Langford, a
Harry Greb [more than any other], a Mickey Walker, a marvel such as Henry Armstrong, transcended weight classes because
they had the rare ability and cujones to often go out of their weight classes and whip much heavier great fighters. Only a special breed can do that. Ray Robinson was so great a fighter at his best as a welterweight that his talent was spellbinding to watch but though the best fighter I ever saw ringside, never
except once again the light punching Joey Maxim, ventured against top LHs when Ray was a middleweight...
Robinson knew his limitations...A wise man knows their boundaries....

    Agreed.

And look at how tough the lh division was around 1980. Those old guys hadn't slipped down the ladder much and guys like Marvin Johnson and Saad Muhammad and mustapha Muhammad would have been too much for Marvin. Let alone about what 1 or 2 year later when mike Spinks and qawi took over?

Marvin trained like a machine and stayed at the weight he had to stay at. How often do we see guys eat their way out of their optimal division and the results go south? Hagler had the discipline to stay there a long long time & that is not easy to pull off.

Great discipline is required to remain in your weight class til the end of your career...Pep had it, Hagler had it too.
