I didn't see any threads on it in here, so I thought I'd start one. Rest in Peace Harold, you were a staple of boxing commentary. You'll be remembered for a long time.
This content is protected I didn't always agree with his cards but hearing his voice always made me happy knowing I was watching another big fight alongside Harold (and Jim, Larry, Roy, George, Gil, Manny etc). HBO had its faults sometimes but it provided some very fond memories for me particularly as a young boxing fan and Harold was an integral part of this. RIP Harold.
I never heard a bad thing about Harold. His scorecards will be missed. I agreed with who he picked as the winner at least 85% of the time. If there were more judges like him, we would have far less bad decisions. I hope HBO can find a way to honor him, perhaps on Real Sports.
I was fortunate to have known Harold fairly well. I grabbed some tickets for an HBO show that rolled into town a few years back and once in the arena I strolled down to say hi to Harold. The televised portion of the show had not started yet so when I got to ringside I saw Merchant sitting with some fans while he drank, Lampley at ringside looking out into the crowd, but what do you think Harold was doing? Sitting intently watching a non-descript 4 rounder. The man was a fight fan through and through.
Sad news...heard he had cancer a few yrs ago but didnt miss a beat on HBO. Alot of people complained about his scoring but mine was almost always the same as his so really no complaints here. I wonder if they made him stop saying " JIM " befor he turned it back over to the Lamp. He stopped doing it a few yrs ago. One of those small things I really missed.
Met him last year at the Spence-Peterson fight, a Showtime card he apparently attended and watched as a fan. Wasn’t in the best shape but he was in his element, holding court while all types of boxing people, including fighters, writers, and trainers, constantly walked over to pay homage and talk boxing with him. Not much of a memory but I’m still glad to have it. RIP.
Years and years ago now, the old mod here named Achillesthegreat once disagreed with a group of posters about some fight or other. He said "You're all a bunch of Ledermans!" .........That's not much of a most prevalent memory really. R.I.P., Harold. You were a big part of the fabric of the times. It's a nice legacy.
Sad News Jim Lampley: "Blah, Blah........Harold, how do have it scored?" Harold Lederman: "Jim, after X rounds, I have it scored..." Truly, Harold seemed like a no no-nonsense class act.
RIP Harold “OK JIM” Lederman. Always entertaining to listen to and was a fair judge, even if his scorecard weren’t always accurate.
