I think a reasonable case can be made for Armstrong at number1,I wouldn't put him there myself ,but he has the qualifications imo.

Obviously this is just my opinion, but the best fighters with a case for number one are Sam Langford and Harry Greb, and them Charles, Robinson and Armstrong should be the next three. But then again, what do I know? :sisi1

Armstrong could well be number one, he shouldn't be lower than five IMHO.

Nah, I don't think I do. You seem to have read more, and have definitely watched more fights and lived through things. I've got some way to go.

I've never read a negative review of his book, all seem to praise the exhaustive research and verified sources in it.
The only minor criticism I've seen is that it's really a collection of facts without a personal story to put some flesh on the skeleton of stats that is Greb .But again I must stress I haven't yet read it.

You're probably the youngest regular poster here - but certainly not the one with least historical knowledge!

Just finishing up Smokestack Lightning. Would be interested to know if this book is worth a read too. Would've ordered Compton's book but it's stupid money now on Amazon.

Perhaps you could get it direct from Klompy?

It’s $40. That’s very reasonable for a book of more than 700 pages that has that more research put into it not to mention rare photos. There’s books half that size that are $30-35.

Are you really encouraging boxing fans to read one and only one book on a fighter? That makes no sense.

Recommend it, sure. Say it’s the best if you’ve read them all and that’s your opinion. But ‘look no further’ sounds like you don’t want people to read other books about Greb. Which is silly.

Only want to hear 1 side of the story even if it contradicts ALL of historical accounts of Greb being a dirty fighter. Just a true 110 yr old conspiracy to nullify a fighter greatness from Tunney lovers and Greb grinders.

I will tell what is silly, your your appraisal of my comments, look its up to whoever to buy what they like, no problem with that at all, my point ( which you missed spectacularly ) was , having read all the books on Greb including Fairs fictional account, dont do what I did and spend hard earned on several diff books, buy Comptons and you will get the best, most informative, most comprehensive read on Greb you will ever get. Smoke clearing ?
