Sam Langford also said that Dempsey was afraid of Wills.

During all that talk in July-August 1925, NY sporting writers predicted Wills-Dempsey gate receipts would have been at least twice larger than those in a potential Dempsey-Tunney bout.

Prediction's are just that predictions. If you were to ask a boxing guy, who would you rather fight, an old slow big guy without a jab or any real boxing skills or a young fast guy with with a jab and good boxing skills, especially after a 3 yr layoff. They would probably pick the old guy, so Rickard and Dempsey picked the easier Tunney, yep that makes sense. Of course Rickard lost big time.
The Dempsey that lost the title and then fought Sharkey would have destroyed Wills much like a cheap imitation of Dempsey, Uzcudon did. 1925, is moot Dempsey didn't fight, 1926 Sharkey beat wills badly.

If the NY writers were correct, then Dempsey - Wills fight would have drawn 3+milion and 240,000 fans would have been attending.

The point is they thought there was a LOT more interest/public demand in Dempsey-Wills bout than there was in Dempsey-Tunney.

So it's okay to quote Sam when he says Dempsey would have beaten Wills, but not when he says Dempsey was afraid of Wills? Can't have it both ways.

You know Greb gets hero status but Dempsey and Darcy are both criticised here for not going to war..... so what is Greb's excuse ???? oh Tommy Gibbons ??? what about Mike Gibbons ????? what about Miske ???...... what about the hundreds of others ???? if two can be labelled why not all of them ?

Greb served during the war. He was in the Navy.

He registered for the draft and voluntarily joined the Navy before his number was called.

    http://www.harrygreb.com/navy_greb_pic.gif

He was stationed for most of his time at the U.S.S. Recruit, later he was attached to the U.S.S. Sierra, and finally he was mustered out.

Tommy Gibbons and Mike Gibbons both served in the United States Army. They both helped train troops in hand to hand combat and Mike authored a manual for the Army on the use of boxing techniques applied to the bayonet. Mike and Tommy were both stationed at Camp Dodge.

None of the previous three claimed any exemption on their draft registrations and I believe the Gibbons brothers, like Greb, volunteered before they were called up.

Billy Miske was exempt from service on the grounds that he had a wife and child but if you want to criticize him and call him a coward be my guest. I haven't seen anyone arguing that Miske was a war hero.

Im not aware of any of those guys having fled their country in disguise under the cover of darkness to avoid the possibility of a draft and make their fortune while their countrymen were being slaughtered by the thousands against the Turks. Im also not aware of any of those guys claiming an exemption and then posing as a naval shipyard worker to the press (while wearing expensive patent leather shoes) to keep Uncle Sam off his back. Can you point to any sources that show either Greb, or the Gibbons brothers did either of these things? Darcy and Dempsey did.

Why not? You guys seem to thrive on double talk, Langford had opinions and that's all it was, it doesnt make it true. Why make more of it then what it is. My opinion and your opinion that's all they are opinions, ya cant win a bar bet with an opinion.

All I see is they joined the same armed forces darcy did and yet all stayed at home... and it's a double standard to criticize Darcy.

    Cheers Steve.

Double standards simply do not impress me... the Darcy haters hate Darcy because he became unbeatable and for some ***** reason you call him a draft dodger but yet he joined the US armed forces.

Nah, it cant be kr aptoon, I thought he was lord tywin, now he's bouncing around in disguise as crocky valleez. Isnt he the one who likes bald muscular black men, and came up with that great Archer cartel conspiracy theory? If it is you then shame on you, you come on here and make noise and then when the heat gets too hot you scurry away like a roach exposed to the light.
