That is a question the book failed to proof decisively. The theory seems sound, but it was just that. The only thing we know is Greb was blind in his right eye when he died. The theory Paxton put across was the first Flowers fight was the beginning of what would lead to a detached retina and thus (in the 1920's), the loss of the eye. Well duh, that was the general theory before I paid £40... I was expecting a lot more than just theories...
I could look at boxrec to see that, I wanted some meat on them fights, the book left me disappointed.
I did not say I was not impressed. I am saying if the only evidence we got is a list of impressive names and some second rate newspaper reports, is that good enough to call Greb one of say, the ten finest fighters ever? Other fighters have got lot more evidence that is backed up with film. Sure that is not Greb's fault, but it is not the others fighters fault either... I was expecting this book to be a Christening of Greb's Greatness, but instead it just leaves more questions, and does not answer a lot either.
Boxrec has some newspaper accounts of his fights like this: The Pittsburgh Post reported that Loughran gave Greb a boxing lesson for the first three rounds, punishing him with a left jab and blocking his punches. For the next 9 rounds, Greb overwhelmed Tommy and built up a good lead, especially with his in-fighting. In the last three rounds, Loughran opened up a strong body attack that gave Harry trouble, but not enough to overcome his big lead.
I don't understand. You rank him #4 based on knowledge you've gathered yourself on the forum, read a **** book, now he's not in your 20? Moyle's book on Langford is better, perhaps you should read that...
