Fair call to Greb, unlike his fans on here, Greb new his limitations and respected the great man.
And here is a good article which put Harry in his strongest light. A les Darcy clone. http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/120290826?searchTerm=darcy greb&searchLimits=
http://www.fultonhistory.com/highli.../hits/c4e0c459030e871e14fe66a04604a8b9#page=1 Being fair to Harry "the American Les Darcy" Greb, it his clear that Harry did want to fight Les Darcy. And he put his money where his mouth was. $2000 to say that he will show up and $1000 if he lasts the distance. So presumably if Greb take a knee often enough, he might just get the win before Darcy KOs him
The funny thing is that Red Mason and Greb exposed this "offer" for exactly what it was by comparing it to the famous offer from Jim Jeffries to fight Jack Johnson in private. Nothing more than a way to pretend you are willing to fight someone that aren't. So Darcy comes to America to make money but when offered a fight he declines an actual purse and instead offers to fight the guy in private for a smaller purse? Please. Mama didn't raise no fool. That's asinine. Its called prizefighting for a reason and the idea of fighting might appeal to the rubes who took that offer seriously and who thought it made Darcy look like a tough guy but in reality the real tough guys actually went out fought before the public for bigger purses. They didn't hide behind fake offers. Here was the Buffalo Morning Express' response to Darcy's ridiculous offer: "Les Darcy, the Australian, when challenged by Greb during his visit in Pittsburgh, made the great mistake of trying to treat the challenge lightly and offering to box a match in private to decide the better man, an old subterfuge to escape a dangerous opponent." -Buffalo Morning Express February 4, 1917
Greb actually got cold feet when he realised Darcy would fight him for real instead of a meaningless ND load of ****. At this stage in Greb's career a fight with Darcy may have ended Greb's career right then and there.
Its silly to pretend these extra -curricular challenges are anything more than ducks.Johnson walked into the saloon and asked Jeffries to defend his title against him .Jeffries replied," I wouldn't draw flies fighting you but I'll go down in the cellar with you". He then fought Jack Munroe and by his own admission lost money on the deal. Johnson's response to Jeffries offer was, "I ain't no cellar fighter".He wanted the title , and he wanted to be paid for taking it. After he pulverised Jeffries brother he walked over to the ropes and said to Jeffries,"I can do the same to you", he , .Jack showed up ringside to challenge Jeffries at all his defences . Hardly the actions of a frightened challenger. Brady, Jeffries manager said Jeffries was always afraid of Johnson, maybe not physically but afraid he might lose his title to horror of horrors , a black man! I digress, prime for prime we don't know what would have happened had Greb fought Darcy, but I venture to say that prime Greb beats the best Darcy there ever existed.
Yeah lets just totally ignore coverage from the very paper covering this story when it doesn't bend down and kiss Darcy's ass. Maybe boilermaker can find a paper from New Zealand that had better coverage of this episode. LOL.
This is a find. The Fearless Harry Greb wasn't so fearless on that day. Too bad, it would have been an interesting match, and perhaps filmed.
If Greb wants to fight in public and Darcy pretends he wants to fight in private who is the coward? Because Greb doesn't exactly have a reputation for running from challengers whereas Darcy during the few months he was in the United States ran from a litany of them and turned down numerous career high purses in the process. At exactly the time Darcy was turning down huge offers to fight those guys Greb was taking short money just to get in the ring with them. Now who was fearless and who wasn't?
In your opinion, why didn't Greb face Darcy? Outside of the obvious ( Darcy died in 1917 ) it seems like a makeable fight. I noticed Darcy has a win over Chip, who defeated Greb. It was Darcy's last fight. He didn't turn down him, so this theory the Darcy was turning down those who fought Greb is an uneven claim.
