There is talk of Harry Greb fighting and beating much bigger men than him. However going over his record on boxrec. I'm not seeing it.
To be fair there are a lot of blanks in the weight listings.
My question which fights was he giving up a large amount of weight. Say at least 15 Lbs the difference between 160 and 175, and winning?

Homer Smith was a heavyweight who generally weighed around the 190 mark...Greb stopped him whilst he was still firmly in his middleweight days.

Smith was tough trialhorse for many of the great heavies of the day..might have even been considered a fringe contender at some point.

Charley Weinert is in the same boat, supposedly he pushed Tunney very close so much so he was granted a rematch soon after. He outweighed Greb by some margin.

Willie Meehan, who holds wins over Jack Dempsey, Jack Dillon and Sam Langford, held a considerable weight advantages over Greb..30 pounds in one of their fights and almost that in another.

Battling Levinsky was a career lightheavy..Greb beat him a few times, Im sure he outweighed him by at least 10 pounds every time.

Probably some more if you dig a little harder rippy old son...Even a lot of the keep busy fights not worth mentioning if you click on them you can see some of the blokes were weighing in 180+ for fights only within a few months of them taking on Greb..so its safe to assume that was their fighting weight.

He was well known for dispatching guys who outweighed him significantly..his management were never to worried about him giving away weight, so they had no problem matching him with guys who were bigger.

Bill Brennan usualy weighed around 200lbs and was verry heavily touted before Greb gave him his first shutout of their series.

Perhaps what is most impresive about Greb is that he was not only beating good bigger men but in some cases bigger men who were themselves pound for pound great fighters.

In their first fight Tunney outweighed him by over 12 pounds.

Bill Brennan generally weighed around 195 pounds, Greb around 160-170.

Gibbons was a light heavy, Greb a middleweight. A weight advantage of atleast 10 pounds.

Billy Miske usually weighed around 180-185 pounds. Kid Norfolk was 175 to 180.

There were also some mediocre 200 pound heavyweights that he beat, such as Homer Smith, Joe Cox, Al Benedict.

I find it more impressive to beat a very good to great fighter who outweighs you by 10 to 20 pounds than an average fighter who outweighs you by 40 pounds.

Greb did know his limits and never attempted to fight the likes of Harry Wills and Fred Fulton, both over 6'3, 210+ pound men.

This is a rather speculative stament on your part.

Greb tried to get fights with Harry Wills, Luis Firpo and Carl Morris.

The latter two especialy were responsible for these fights not happening.

There are some facts to back it up. I don't know about Firpo and Morris, but Greb did not seem interested in facing Wills and Fulton.

Janitor has named one of the obvious names Brennan, for more info I suggest a PM To Klompton to fill in the gaps.

I remember reading an article about Dempsey-Greb and their possible match up. The article speculated as to whether or not Dempsey would take the usual route for a champion looking to duck a contender and tell him to go and add some names to his HW resume. The writer declared this impossible due to the depth of Greb's HW resume, indicating that it might even be the equal to Dempsey's own.

The size of his HW opponents to their modern counter-parts doesn't matter. Greb was a HW contender weighing in at and around the MW limit.

I would like to thank everyone for the information. However I'm looking for numbers. Their actual weights. Not this boxer was a light heavyweight or heavyweight.

If there were numbers they would be presented. klompton or slakka might have some additional knowledge on the weights though. BoxRec can be faulty on these matters when it comes to the early 1900's.

Keep in mind also Jack Renault and Quinten Romero Rojas, who whooped Jack Sharkey as world class fighters in the 190-195 pound range destroyed by a one eyed middleweight.
