Interesting because Greb may have had more success at light heavy than middle .. Considering the hell Harry had with Norfolk I can't pick against Moore here ..
Probably because you've never seen Greb fight, which makes picking him over Moore difficult... I suppose you could argue for Greb based upon his domination of Tunney in his own prime. But I dunno.
And Moore seems a tad slow and wide with his punches... but most of the footage pf him is when he is old.
Personally Greb. No technician seems to have got far against him, unless he turned tiger, and fought like a technical offensive artist!
It's a fight i would pay to see. I can't believe it has not been brought up before. So hard to call :good
Found this response from a few years back when the question was posed outside esb. Wow. I am normally pretty quick to respond. This has got me stumped. So lets break it down. Greb was 5 ft 8 in Record-Total fights 298- Wins 261/ Wins by KO 48/Losses19/Draws 18/No contests 6 Moore was 5 ft 11 Record-Total fights 220( 1 no-decision)/Wins 185/Wins by KO 131*(* Varied figures)/losses 23/Draws 11 Now, I am a huge fan of Greb and being from San Diego, my hero growing up was Mr Moore. I saw Mr.Moore hitting the heavy bag once when I was a teenager at Murphs Gym downtown San Diego, and I had my back turned to him. I heard and felt that heavy bag being hit, and I remember thinking "who is the new guy, destroying the bag?" after the round ended I turned over to see who it was and Mr Moore was walking away from the bag. HE WAS JUST PLAYING WITH IT, no hand-wraps, no gloves, just THEE baddest 76 yr old I have ever seen or heard. The way he hit was different. Just experience. Later on I had the opportunity to work out with ODLH and he also hit the bag differently than all of us at the gym. There is a champion echelon of fighters and I realized then I wasn't on that level. Back to the question, I love boxing, and I LOVE great match ups. I think by reading about Greb and having read books and seen video on Mr Moore, rated number 4. as the Ring Magazines All Time Greatest Punchers, I think the punching power of Archie Moore would have been the deciding factor in this fight, and not that it would end up in a knock out, I don't think it would, but the nod for me goes in an all out boxing match, strategic, battle, knock down drag out fight after 15 rounds goes to The Old Mongoose. At light heavy I think Mr Moore wins. He was bigger, he was fast, and he took shots. He would have hit and stuck Greb with shots that may have changed the course of the fight, We know Greb could take a shot. He was hit by some of the toughest Heavyweights out there, but Mr Moore had more power than Dempsey and Tunney wasn't known for his knock out ability. I think its a great boxing match, but later rounds are all Moore, who was once of the best conditioned fighters of any era. Whats funny is I just was talking to a buddy yesterday that I think Harry Greb might be the best fighter ever. I think GREAT fighters fight anyone, Greb did that, I think GREAT fighters have to be winners, but we all know you cant win them all, sometimes a fighter has your number, sometimes it isn't your night. I think on this night, Moore wins. Who knows, I love thinking about it though, wouldn't it have been great to see?? Thanks for the great questions.
That is a seemingly discerning analysis, but Moore had more power than Dempsey? WHy, he had so many fights & KOs, but how do you figure her had better power?
So Archie Moore a great LH had MORE POWER than Jack Dempsey attributed to be in the same category as Joe Louis ? Oh well, to each his own....
Greb for me. Too fast, too busy and too mobile. Archie fought flat-footed and had trouble locating mobile boxers. Harold Johnson and Charley Burley gave him all sorts of trouble.
