Two of the three most highly regarded middleweight champions of all time. Would Greb's (described) frenetic in and out assaults upset Monzon's consistantly dominant control of a fight's pace and pattern? What is your analysis of this fight between the two greats? Why do you think one great should be picked over the other? How would the bout be fought? Are there stylistic advantages for one over the other? 15 rounds. What do you think? What is the consensus of the ESB board?
BIG DEE HERE= I have never heard it put like that before I`m going to laugh about this one for days. Everytime I think about it, GREBINIZATION I wonder if that`s what Gene Tunney went thru as he was GREBINIZED in their first fight.
BIG DEE HERE= It sounds as if somebody has been ground-up and spit out. I have always compared fighting Harry Greb to fighting the Tasmainian Devil from the cartoons.
A fight between these two ATG's would be very close IMO. What stylistic attributes would Greb have to attack Monzon? Plenty!...When I picture in my mind's eye of what Greb would present in the ring, I see a pressure/swarmer that attacks from different angles throwing volumes of punches, with a rough physical style of smothering an opponent's punches, along with lacing, heeling, cuffing, elbows, and an occasional head butt. Maybe a mixture of Lou Ambers and Joe Calzaghe? What would Monzon counter with against the onrushing, in and out attacks of Greb? Monzon would have the tools to do it, height, reach, size, punching accuracy, and power enough to hurt anyone at 160 lbs. Monzon always dictated the pace of his fights...ALWAYS. If Greb managed to get inside, would Monzon just clinch? Monzon was used to European referees who would separate the clinches quickly..there seemed little prolonged inside fighting in Monzon fights...How would Monzon adapt if forced to fight longer on the inside with a very rough customer like Greb? On the outside, Monzon might find Greb's head a somewhat difficult target, as Tunney stated when recalling their fights...Along with a fantastic left jab to probe and score, a punishing straight right hand to the body would problably be Monzon's best punch in this fight. Both have the tools and the experience. Is a peak Carlos Monzon a fair comparison to a young Gene Tunney at light heavy? I think it might be...IMO Monzon has a better punching variety and accuracy than Tunney. Anybody up for an analysis of this great match-up? Pick a winner? Anybody?
Tunney was most definitely GREBINIZED in that one!!! Haha As for the thread, i'll go for Monzon and Greb, depending on which newspaper decision u read up on!!! Hahaha
:good Seriously though, im a bit embarrassed to say that i find it really difficult to make a pick. I hear that any1 that tried to fight Greb at distance would be beaten, but its not as if Monzon's gunna be boxing at distance on the backfoot. Monzon fought at HIS distance, he was so dominant, and thats why its hard to pick against him ever. Was Greb's style somewhat Calzage but more roughhouse? In and out movement and swarming all the while. Anyhow, i'll make a pick and go with my hart by picking Greb, whoever wins this will just do what they always do because thats what they do best, and they do it with dominance.
As to styles, I'll guess that Monzon has the edge. The key is his accuracy, the jab. He's a great jabber, and he wings across a very hard, accurate right hand in behind it. He is also a wonderful timer of his man. Given that Greb's movement is so difficult to predict, this is not neccesarily going to be a determining factor, but I still think that that lazer guided one two is going to have a say.
Sorry dpw417, it seems we are all avoiding really analysing this one a bit! Rename this thread Charley Burley!! Serves you right for making such a difficult thread! Kidding! Anything with the top 5 MWs will always be hard to pick imo. Very tight pickings!
Tommy Loughran said the key to mastering Greb was to start fast and keep on top of him taking away his momentum. As Tunney matured and grew heavier he was abe to handle Greb inside ,short hard punches to the ribs and heart sapped Harry's legendary stamina and slowed down his rushes,Monzon was a very good body puncher, which isnt often mentioned.Very tough fight to call,it might hinge on what Greb can get away with, the power and reach are with Monzon ,but Harry was used to conceding these advantages, could he out hustle the methodical calculating Argentinian? I think so ,but it would be close ,very close imo.
