timely as I've just spent all day engrossed with the history of the LHW division. I think it's more of a timeline thing to be honest. Had they fought before 1923, the Greb who battered Tunney surely secures victory here. Any time after that I favour Delaney to take Greb on points. Prime for prime, I'd have to pick Greb who defeated much greater opponents and is much more proven.
I think in reality greb would have nicked a points decision round about 23/24 then dropped a decision in a rematch a year or so later. Two great fighters in a division i'm enjoying more and more each time I look into it.
I can't see Greb beating a prime vicious power punching Dempsey. Sure he would trouble him for awhile but sooner or later Jack would catch him and it would be over. I'm talking prime vs prime. Dempsey would have nearly 30 lbs in weight, 3 or 4 inches in height and advatages in reach and power as well. At best Greb goes the dsitance only to lose a dscision. I hear that Greb once gave Dempsey fits in sparring once but sparring and fighting are 2 different animals altogether. Toledo Dempsey or Firpo Dempsey would simply be too much for the middleweight Greb.
Delaney was present for at least one of the Dempsey /Greb sparring matches .Afterwards Greb purportedly told him he was after a fight with the Mauler ,Delaney told him to forget it ,saying something along the lines of ,you made a ****** out of Jack for 3 rds ,but nobody gets away with that stuff over 15 with Dempsey .
I read the full thing you wrote reading Dempsey as Delaney and up until the point of you mentioning Toledo i was very confused.
