What would they have been if this sometimes proposed match had come off?

Harry Greb was coming into his own by 1918, when Dempsey lifted the championship off of Willard.

The precedent for star middleweights challenging the HW champion of the world was still fresh in the publics mind from fights like Ketchel vs. Johnson. Dempsey had already fought a handful of smaller yet skilled men in title fights, including Carpentier and Gibbons.

So what if Greb's handling of Dempsey in sparring matches had continued into a actual fight between the two? What would a Greb win of meant for the boxing world? A rematch? Would Dempsey never become the first great American sports hero? Would Greb be more well known then he currently is? Would Greb be a consenus lock for the greatest fighter of all time?

I really have to tell you something, it's been nagging me for a few days. It's not 'would of' or 'should of', it's 'would have' and 'should have.'

But anyway, Dempsey would likely beat the **** out of Greb in a real fight. He probably didn't get handled at all, infact from what I've read it was more or less even (as you'd expect in sparring between two great contemporaries with respect for each other). It was probably more of a case of people wanting Greb to do better than he actually did, just because he was smaller.

I can't imagine Dempsey being too reserved for anyone, knowing his nature and hunger around the time he won the title.

It's all but verified that he knocked Tony Galento out cold as a old man in sparring.

BY 1923 Greb was staring to be beaten by Tunney whom he called too big and strong, that year Dempsey was still active ,he kod Firpo. Now Greb was a great fighter ,maybe the greatest ,but if Tunney ,by his own admission was becoming too powerful for him I think a still active Dempsey beats him convincingly.Sparring limited rounds is not the same as going the Championship route I dont think Harry, great as he was could keep Dempsey off for the 15 rds.Tommy Loughran made a ****** out of Dempsey in sparring ,I think it would have been different in a real fight even though by then Jack was fading.

Those comments are attributed to Greb after the final fight with Tunney in 1925 not 1923 when Greb was robbed in his rematch with Tunney. Id love to see an actual source for those comments as they originate from Tunney after Greb had died.

BIG DEE HERE= I am about as knowledgable a man on this forum about Harry Greb that writes. I believe him to be the greatest Middleweight who ever lived and the greatest P4P fighter also with all due respect to Sam Langford who is right there with him. I believe this to be so true it is going on my TOMBSTONE. It will say this engraved for all to see untill it get torn down or
wears away. AS A BOXING HISTORIAN MY LAST WORDS ON THE SUBJECT IS HARRY GREB THE PITTSBURGH WINDMILL WAS AND IS AT THE TIME OF MY DEATH THE GREATEST MIDDLEWEIGHT AND P4P PROFESSIONAL PRIZE FIGHT WHO EVER LIVED. PERIOD!!! Well that`s what it`s going to read and it is The Pittsburgh Windmill not the damn Human Windmill as that was put on him by those damn idiots in the suits with the typewriters in New York.

BIG DEE HERE= Oh one thing I forgot to add is that Harry Greb said he would like to fight Jack Dempsey but only for 6 rds because after that he`d kill me.
That`s a fact not legend, HARRY SAID IT IN PRINT.

Ive never read that Greb was robbed in the 23 fight,Box Rec for example gave Tunney 9 of the 15 rds.The 25 fight was an emphatic win for Tunney Greb was lucky to go the distance.Where is your source that Greb made those remarks in 25 ? Where is your source that they originated from Tunney? My point in quoting them was to show that Tunney had become to big and physically superior to Greb as he matured and gained experience,so if he was too much fighter for Harry during this time I have no doubt that Dempsey would be too.Greb was never more tha a small LH that he beat sio many good big men is a tribute to his talent ,but I think DEmpsey wopuld be "a bridge too far".When Dempsey took on a smallish LH in Carpentier he crucified him.

Dempsey was notoriously poor and/or disinterested while sparring. They would often bring in marks on the last days of camp just so he would get some KD's and KO's in his favor.

Dempsey, during an actual fight, was quite a different commodity.

If you never heard that Tunney was given a gift decision against Greb in their Feb 1923 fight then you obviously havent read many of the next day reports. the number of people who thought Greb won FAR outweighed those who voted for Tunney. It was called one of the worst decisions in New York history.
