the same reason people who have only seen floyd mayweather fight think he is the greatest of all time.... you know, because he is undefeated and all....and the "ppv champ" so he must be the greatest

The mind of nostalgia nuthuggers operates in mysterious ways.

Seriously, just look at him ¨sparring¨..lol at this punk being 2nd GOAT or something

Just look at the way they move in that video ffs, these guys have no skill at all. You fight how you train, if someone looks like **** while training, odds are he's gonna look like **** when he fights. How many top boxers have you ever seen that look like **** during their workouts?

People like Greb got impressive records just because the competition was equally pathetic in those primitive days. And I bet Greb cheated against Tunney, loaded his gloves, juiced up to the eyeballs etc, or maybe Tunney was extremely sick or injured when they fought because Greb winning absolutely makes no sense.

Tunney who was a great technician (a rarity in those days) should have made mincemeat out of this no skill having caveman with gloves.

Ranking is about who you beat; how good you are and how good you look are 2 different things. We have footage of who he beat, and they are considered very historically accomplished fighters.

I think boxing improved until the 80s and then hit a sharp decline. having said that, sometimes intangibles are crazy. You can have some **** technique but then because of other things (don't get tired, don't get hurt, hit hard, move fast) you can be extremely hard to beat.

There are guys who look like a million bucks training (which I have labeled the Zab Judah type fighter, though he made it to world class level) who crumble as soon as they get hit.

Pac and Pryor kind of fight like amateurs, but they are pretty hard to deal with. Greb was probably in that camp, because yeah, he looks like a flailing bum, but his head to head record speaks for itself, just as much as guys who are more polished. there must have been something he did that made him hard to deal with, and I think it is intangibles.

    :deal

It annoys me when people watch footage and become instantly dismissive, they don't even try to learn about or understand the roots of the sport.

Fighters in the 20's lived in a different time to fighters now. Not just in the ring but out of it. Culturally, medically, nutritionally, it goes on.

You can only estimate a fighter by who he beat and in what circumstances he beat them.

Sure Resume is a huge part of rankings but technical skills are also a large part of it, and we can not accurately judge that based of off writing.

Look at his wins bottom line. You don't win that many fights against all time greats by ****in accident. Some of you guys are funny as hell.

Resume is the defining factor. Technical skills is something that for all intents and purposes should supplement resume.

Sure, reading something isn't the same as watching it. But you can get a good opinion on fighters if you read enough about them.

You can't properly gauge the effectiveness or dimension of a skill unless it's tested against a range of quality opposition. If you told me someone swept in and beat Mayweather, Pacquiao, Marquez, Cotto, and Martinez, I wouldn't need to see footage of them to know they were highly skilled. If you go by the aesthetics of a fighter's style over their resume, you end up with a mess of fighters that often look good against mediocre opposition, and ATG's that look like they're struggling against their best and stiffest opponents. How good you are isn't about how good you look.
