I am in an argument on another forum, a poster there, banned from here says Harry Greb's real surname was Berg, ie Greb reversed and this points to him being Jewish we know his forenames were Edward Henry and his parents were Pious and Anne, both of which are derivatives of latin origin, though Anne is also a derivative of Hannah, a Hebraic name. Can anyone say with certainty what his name and origins were? Is klompton still posting here ?
Does anyone else find it the least bit suspicious that Klompton backwards is Notpmolk? As in, he's not Polk, but with an 'm' thrown in there to make it like a code, like pig Latin? As in, he really is a Polk? Polk, as in from the Scots surname POLLACK, as in...ADAM POLLACK?!!!
I did find the following: https://www.harrygreb.com/birthcertificate.html So I of course cannot verify it is legit, but will throw it in to the mix
So the thought struck me too, since Berg is a Germanic name for mountain. I'd mentioned it to Klompton and iirc he set me straight that the correct name is indeed Greb.
Or Polk Salad Adam? Done some cursory checking this morning, Greb was his real name his parents were Catholics, his Father Pious a German immigrant, his Mother Annie of German descent. They were buried in a Catholic Cemetary, and so was Harry ,though a different one.Greb took the name Harry in honour of a deceased brother of that name.Greb married Mildred Riley who was presumably of Irish Catholic heritage. If I have got anything wrong,I'm sure Klompton will be along to correct me in his usual courteous manner.
Yep, it’s true - Harry Greb was really Harry Berg. Also, Larry Holmes is actually Jewish as well - Larry Holmes is just an anagram of his real name…. Lerry Shalom.
This story's been around since the 20s and seems to persist no matter how many times it's debunked. It doesn't stand up to investigation. Multiple documentary sources - the birth certificate, the 1900 census - confirm that his family name was Greb. I've read that it was made up by a press agent because at some point it was better for business to be Jewish rather than German. I wouldn't want to stake my house on the truth of that story either.
I’ve actually heard that it was Berg as well although reversed at some point in time. But that he was of German descent not Jewish. Pennsylvania has a large German community in America. Perhaps that was just a rumor, as Berg is more common a surname than Greb
Yea I had a Jewish gentleman tell me this too. I don't buy it. From everything I've ever read Greb is German on his father's side and Irish on his Mother's.
His real name isn’t Harry Greb. It’s actually HAROLD Greb. They misspelled it on the birth certificate so it looks like Henry, but it’s Harold. Happens all the time.
Hey Mc, is this one of those WHO AM I questions? #XXXXIX - because I so know the answer/name of the banned poster and his former alias also (for bonus points).
