Ive heard obvi alot about Greb and how he is like one of the greatest but i havnt seen any footage of him fighting (i dont think there is any if im right?) but i was watchin the Hopkins-Holmes Fight the otherday and i was wonderin if he fought like hopkins does on the inside but except with alot more punches bein thrown and i also imagine he would be able to foul on the sly lke hopkins because ive heard Greb was a bit of a master at things like that.
Nobody alive in '09 has ever seen any or much of Greb in the ring.......... Film footage is between rare and non-existant............ BUT! From written accounts, Greb by all means was a rugged brawler who applied lotsa' pressure.... It is also said he was wild and crazy much of the time with his punches / attack........ He also had a sturdy chin that he allowed his opponents / victims to test during a fight....... Other than that, its a lot of speculation........... Was Greb a stylist? Hell, No..... Was he the best ever at 160?? I doubt it......... Was he the best middleweight of the 1920s? Sure, okay......... MR.BILL
really i was just wonderin cuz alot of people put himm really rate him as like top10 in their alltime lists
EXTRA: Inspite of Greb's bulging bicep muscles for a middleweight, Greb was not a known power-puncher............. Greb had plenty of distance fights going to the local newspaper or score-cards....... His KO % is not all that impressive......... Harold Greb (1895-1926) died at age 31 undergoing an operation for retina problems sustained in the ring and a car accident........ The poor ******* was nearly blind when he fought and lost to Tiger Flowers in early '26....... Greb prolly had an allergic reaction to the ether they were stuffing his face with on the table......... That **** happened from time-to-time back in them days........... MR.BILL
Well, hell...... At 160, sure.... 'Grebberman' is all-time top-10 material with ease........ :deal MR.BILL
Greb is one of the best ever for me i rank him number 4 behind Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong and Ali, he beat all time greats tunney only man to ever beat gene was greb, walker, tiger flowers and many other greats from that era, also use to to beat up top ranked heavyweight contenders and he did a number on jack dempsey in sparring. I cant really say much about his style cause av only read about it never seen it, but from what av read greb had great stamina, would throw punches non stop and had a great chin and was fearless! One of the best middleweight fights from that era not to happen was greb vs les darcy, that would of been a classic
The thing that frustrates me is where were the damned camera's and film at his fights? What the hell were they all thinking about?
lol yh but youknow he must of been great cause he is talked about so much are there any other fighters like that - great legacy but no actual footage
I believe it was Tunney that said he was like a cork in water, up and down perptual motion. I think he said he moved in and out of range constantly as well. Similar to how Aaron Pryor, as an amateur at least, darted in and out.
alright theres a good video of him doin some sparrin i fink with jack'o'brian i fink its obviously not showcase of how greb fighted but probly is a lil glimpse
From reports of him, he was apparently very fast of hand and foot, and had an awkward style which constantly alternated between dancing and slugging, with unpredictable flurries of punches.
If I had to compare him to any recent fighter reading reports, he came off to me as a rich man's Joe Calzaghe.
Even with motion pictures, less than 5% of films from the pre1930 era survive. So with boxing films, it has to be much less. Yes, they were filmed. No, to our knowledge, they do not survive. Unless you know a certain friend of mine.
