Norton in an absolute blow-out. Matthews was a hype-job, a bean pole masquerading in the heavy division.
You are kidding, right? Norton is way too big and strong for Kid Matthews, who was only about 175-180 pounds and was not a puncher, although he was a finely skilled quick boxer with nice ring generalship. But boxers didn't give Norton much trouble.
I remember reading an interview with Archie Moore surveying the heavyweight division at the time and he dismissed Matthews outright as a creation of his manager.
Well, I've seen Matthews in a few fights against quality opposition, and I can see that he was legitimate. Plus you can also look at his record and see that he was for real.
Haven't seen much of Mathews to make any real convictions. But he is being described as a boxer without any real notable power, and one that is apparently smaller in size than many of the boxers Norton Defeated. I suppose if this description is true, then its difficult to imagine him besting a man who defeated Ali, Young, Quarry and troubled a prime Holmes. Norton sounds like the more reasonable pick.
As convincing an indictment of the 1950's heavyweight division as could ever be made. Absolutely appalling that he made any headway in the division.
your _ucked, and it's become quite clear that past fighters are dross to you... when the opposite is true!!! generally speaking.
Because 6 foot 3 inch, 175 pound guys are such a force in the division these days, or in the 90's, 80's or 70's, what I classify as the "real heavyweight era".
