Wills was in a few no contests ,fights in which both parties agreed not to hurt each other. Three that were formally called off because the referee wasn't satisfied with the "commitment "of either man, there may well have been more that went beneath the radar. Were all the Langford fights kosher including the draws ? We don't know. I'm not condemning him ,the lot of the black fighter was a tough one , but its a stretch for me to think these guys were trying in every match in their round robin series with each other.
I agree .. either the quote is false or incomplete ... his record shows he was far more than a good journeyman ... too many rip Wills to justify Dempsey not fighting him ..
There is no justification for him not getting his title shot and he could just as justifiably received one against Willard imo.
You hit it on the head, they had to have known each other, you're right they must have approached it like a paid sparring session. I got that feeling after reading about one of the Langford fights like it was a traveling road show.
I cant believe, that in that era that there were no Louis's, Liston's, or even an Holyfield. Might be my next thread, Why were there no Louis's, Liston's or Holyfield, was it lack of trainers. Was Jack Blackburn's attitude about training black HW, the prevailing view?
That's a good description of it imo. We know they were in earnest in some of their fights, but I think a tacit agreement not to get too frisky was reached in others. I don't blame them, their lot was a pretty dire one at times ,short end money , with little or no opportunities to fight for titles,[at least in the 2 heaviest divisions,] they had to make $$$$ where and when they could.
Once again you've proven your lack of reading comprehension. This was a report of sparring in preparation for his fight against Denver Ed Smith. Portland,Astoria and Milwaukie were great fight towns in the early 1900's. These were not uninformed rubes commenting. Now go ahead and respond with emoticons...

Wait. I knew you were old as dirt (tho you prefer 13 year girl emoticons) but you are old enough to have seen Wills? Then I defer to your expertise.
Oregonian 4/17/19 "(Wills) is a splendid specimen of athletic perfection, clean limbed, with long, flexible muscles and catlike speed in his movements. "As a boxer no heavyweight past or present has shown more skill or science that has Wills and the precision and force of his punch has been demonstrated.. "'I am a fast black,' Wills asserted ' and on my honor as a colored gentleman I promise not to hit any white man with anything except the brown gloves that will cover my hands. Isn't that fair enough? If that doesn't suite the gentleman I will use a little white enamal on my features. Anything to please them.'"
Tulsa World, 11/5/19 "Wills arrived in town yesterday morning and worked yesterday afternoon at the Dreamland theater... The several hundred boxing fans who saw were amazed at the remarkable speed and agility of Wills, who despite his 215 pounds of bone and muscle, is as fast as a lightweight."
Boston Herald, 7/27/20 "The speed of the colored man (Wills) plainly bothered Fulton, and coupled wth his heavy hitting made it easy work for him to dispatch his opponent. "Wills is the right type that will force Dempsey to show his best brand of fighting. He is fast, clever and packs a heavy punch for a fighter with his speed."
Denver Post, 4/24/20 "As (Langford and Wills) squared off, it looked more like a tilt between a Giant and a midget. Wills was much stronger. He has a great advantage in weight and was undoubtedly much faster."
Ah Shamoo, always trying to stay afloat, I have come on here and have posted many, many times that the clips were underwhelming never have I said that I have seen him live. Another smoking gun gone pffft. This is what happens when you think, or are made to think. Then you are saying the available emoticons to ESB posters are for 13yr old girls only. Sorry didn't know that, I will find emoticons suitable for intellectuals like yourself.
