I haven't found an answer and have meant to ask this for a while. Can anyone recall a fighter literally being saved by the bell? The rules for championship fight are usually that a fighter can't be saved by the bell in any round including the final round, but sometimes the rule allows a fighter to be saved by the bell in the last round only, and maybe there's jurisdictions that allow a fighter to be saved by the bell in any round. So when we see a knock down at the end of the round and in most cases at the end of the fight the the bell doesn't ring till the fighter gets up and is cleared ok with an 8 count. But when the rule allows a fighter to be saved by the bell has a fighter even been knocked down with less than 10 seconds left in the fight, not got off the canvas, the bell rang, and the fight then went to the scorecards? I can't recall when, but hasn't this happened at least once?

Don't try to say that the last round rule was in effect and Taylor should've been saved by the bell against Chavez. Watch the seconds left and Richard Steele's count. He was knocked down with 16 seconds left, and even with Steele counting at slightly slower than a count per second if Taylor stayed down Steele would have reached 10 with time still remaining, so he couldn't have been saved by the bell.

The contemporary rules almost always state that a fighter can't be saved by the bell in any round to avoid it from actually happening, but come on wouldn't it be cool if it did happen? Isn't boxing history kind of missing something if a knocked out fighter hasn't won a decision?

Nope. The bell might have rung before he was knocked down and unofficially saved him from being officially knocked down, but had he been knocked down the rules for that fight didn't allow him to be saved by the bell.

Lucien Bute was literally saved by the bell in his first fight with Andrade ... thanks to the ref. He couldn't even walk back to his corner on his own.

Saved by the ref yes, and if the ref properly gave him a count and assessed Bute he might have been fair to stop it, but the saved by the bell rule was not in effect so not 'literally saved by the bell.'

In Robinson-LaMotta II, round 8, LaMotta knocked Ray Robinson out of the ring. The count was nine when the bell rang, saving Robinson from a knockout. Robinson lost the fight by UD, the first loss of his career.

Also, Michael Moorer vs Mike "The Giant" White. White broke Moorer's consecutive knockout streak by going the distance. But he was knocked out (on the floor) with one-second left in the fight and was saved by the bell.

Great info! That was probably one of the cases that led to the rules preventing a fighter from being saved by bell, at least in rounds before the last.

There's definitely been cases of it happening back in the old days.
I mean, I've read accounts of a fight where a fighter was OUT COLD at the end of the fight and won on a decision!
Can't for the life of me remember who the fighters were though, or whether it was a title fight ....

Might be worth posting this in the Classic section too.

Like every post but one, again not applicable. But I guess it's fun taking a look at these controversial knockdowns at the of rounds or fights. When a fighter goes down from a punch that lands after the bell he can't be officially knocked down or out. It's a foul. If it's intentional the guy who threw the punch should be disqualified, if it's unintentional and the fighter can't get up it's a no contest, like Barthelemy-Mendez, or I guess like the headbutt rule after a certain number of rounds they'd go the scorecards. Anyway, Cortez screwed up by calling it a knockdown.
